Semi-Weekly Tribune Ira L. Bare, Editor and Publisher. SUBSCRIPTION RATES. One Year by Mail in a.lvuaco $1.25 Ono Year by Carrier in mlvance $1.00 Entered at North Platte, Nobraska, Post ofilco m VI Class Matter. TUESDAY, AUG. 13 1914. W. II. C. Woodlinrst, who is a enn dldtito for the republican nomination for llont representative from tho dis trict composed of Lincoln and Koith counties Is, in point of residence one of our old citizens. Mr. Woodhurst came to North Platte with his parents about forty years ugo, and has, with the exception of a fow years, been a continuous resident. Since arriving at manhood Mr. Woodhurst has been promlnont in business, political and social circles in North Platte. For a long porlod of time ho has been en gaged In tho insurnnco and real estate business and for sovoral years was stato agent for tho North British Co, Ho filled tho position of receiver of tho United States land office for two terms of four years each, and has over been an active worker In tho republi can party. Mr. Woodhurct'o oxpori onco in the field of business, hlswldo acquaintance throughout the stato, and his well known lovel-hoadodncsB, well fits him for a member of tho Ne braska legislature. It Is not ofton that western Nebras ka has u candidate for a stato ofllce, and now that it has one in tho portion of Stnto Scnntor Iloaglaud, who asks tho republican nomlimtlon for Hou tcnant govornor, tho members of Ills party should glvo him their unanimous support at tho primary election next Tuesday. As a niembor of tho senate, Mr. Hongland introduced and suc ceeded in having passed many meas ures that alTocted wostorn Nebraska, in fact tho west part oft ho stato has novcr before boon represented in the Bonato by ono who wielded so much Inlluonco ns did Sonator Iloagland.'Wo hopo every republican In the west part of tho state will cast ills prlinnrj vote for Waltor V. Hoagland for lieu tenant govornor and thuj show tholr appreciation of the work ho has done for tho"sand hill section of Nobraska. Rcadors of tho Omaha and Lincoln daily papors, tho nows' service of which covors tho entire stato, must conclude that tho crop conditions nro not no good as wore painted the early part of tho season. Small grain Is not yielding ns bountifully ns predicted, and Just nt present tho Inck of mois ture in much of tho corn belt ar'ea has damaged the corn crop to an appreci able extent. It is hoped that high pricos for farm products will prevail and thus oven up for whatever short ago thoro may bo in the crop. Wo agreo with John McConnel that hotter roads In tho county aro needed, and that a two mill levy which would produco $40,000 might help, but as wo .havo sovoral hundred mll03 of ronds in Lincoln county that badly noed "fixing," tho $40,000 would lmrd lya a drop In tho pall. Undor tho present levy wo expend about $20,000 a year for ronds, but tho work is dis tributed ovor such a wide area that ono, ficnrcoly notices whero tho money is oxpended. I. D. Brownflold, the candidate for tho democratic nomination for shorlff, has lived in Lincoln county over slnco ho wns "kneo high to a grasshoppor," locating in Walaco precinct with his parents when that precinct was first bolng settled by farmers. For a num bor of years ho has resided In or near Ilorslioy. Acquaintances endorse him as a young man of oxcellont reputa tion. Piofers Good Roads to Court IIoiiho Somerset, Nobr., July 25, 1914. To tho Editor of tho North Platto ' Tribuno: , Dear Sir: I wish to say a llttlo about tho pro posed voting of a five mill levy for a new court houso. I say vo need a now court houso, but there nro lots of other things thut wo need worse This is a big county, and It is a long way to the county scat. I live In the south part of tho county and there Is not a dooont road to the county seat. Thoro aro wire gatoa to open. Tho county la also so dlvldod as to commissioners' districts that it Is impossible to got a county commis sioner on either tho north or uouth sldo of tho county. Tho county Bponds annually on the road from North Platto to tho Experimental Station, about $1000VQ0 nnd thoro is no road thoro satisfactory to travel a great Bliaro of tho time. Thoy don't mnko It right, or drag it when it should bo dragged. Thoy should havo macad amized It ton or flftoon years ago. Now I am In favor of voting a two mill lovy to macadamize all low, bad roads, and to do away with all hoard or wlro gates on roods, and not to build a now court house until tho roadB In tho county aro In audi shapo as to.mako it bo tho people in tho country can got to tho county Bent in nomo way satisfactory. Thoro aro hudrods of pcopio that deal with mall order houses that would drlvo to North Platto If thoy could got thoro on a half-way decent road. I furthor think that voting a live mill tax now Is vory foolish. Why not vote bonds for tho people to pay that will get tho full boncflt of tho now court houso in ton years from now. A two mill tax tlign will rnlso as much as flvo mills will now, nnd will ho much onslor to i?ay. Boforo ton years you will soo tho C. B. & Q. railroad running along the rlvpr through Lincoln county, with mnchlno shops nnd othor improvo mcntB. By that tlmo also, the hills will bo stocked witli good cattle and horses and all tho grass will bo eaten. Now my advico is to vote against tho five mill levy for tho court houso, but first boost for ucceslblo roads all over tho county. Not morely in and around North Platto, and boost In earnest. Boost ono nnd nil, and boost all tho tlmo, nnd then North Platto will in tlmo got tho now court house, and will get fifty per cent more trade and grow faster. North Platte needs tho aid of tho country to build her up and nothing but good roads will bring this about, Tho pcopio in tho outlying parts of the county aro anxious to go to North Platto and trade there, but tlio roads leading to tho county seat aro Im passable most of tho year. JOHN McCONNEL, ..A resident of Lincoln County, Neb. HON IKS I'OK LINCOLN IIIflinVAY HllinUi; SHJNL'D AND SL'NT OFF Tho coupons for tho bonds of tho Lincoln Highway bridge which were recently voted by the voters of Platte precinct and of North Platte, wcro signed the latter part of last wcok by Commissioner D. 15. White, chairman of tho county board, and wcro sent to the stnte auditor's ofilco to ho approv ed and registered and. returned. The bonds issued wcro for $25,000, which is tho part tho district will havo to pay on tho $50,000 bridge. Of,, this amount Plnttc precinct voted $13, 000 worth of bonds bearing six per cont Interest and North Platto voted $12,000 bearing flvo per cent. Com missioner White Rlgned his name thrco hundred and thirty-six times to the coupons. After tho bonds nro registered with tho stato auditor they will be returned hero and the commissioners will ad vortlso for bids on tho brldgo as soon as tho bonds aro sold. Tliey expect to sell tho bonds this fall and get tho bids In In tlmo to havo tho work start ed this fall. State Englnoor Price stntcd a fow days ago that tho state de partment wns leady at any time for tho work to begin and that as soon as tho bonds woro sold tho work could begin at once. It Is hoped that tho work will start this fall as it will tako sovoral montliB for Its comple tion and many aro nnxlous for the brldgo to bo completed. LINCOLN CONSTRUCTION CO. BUILDING NLMV HBADGATII Work wa3 recently begun by the Lin coln Construction Co. on a now head gnto for the old canal which starts four mils northwest of Sutherland and empties into tho river a short dis tance northwest of this city. WORK ON SUTIIFRLANO BRIDGE IS PROGRESSING NICELY Work on tho now stato aid bridge that Is being constructed at Suther land Is progressing rapidly and tho work on tho brldgo propor will bo started this week. Tho Lincoln con struction Co. has tho work and they havo nearly completed tho fill lead ing up to tho brldgo. Tho river is 3200 foot wide at that placo and a fill of 2400 feet hns been mado coming from each way, which will leave olght hundred feet fort ho bridge. State Engineer D, D. Prlco and his doputy woro visiting at tho slto last wcok and thoy stnted that tho pile drlvor has been shipped already and thnt tho work of driving piles will bo started this weok. Tho piles will bo driven into tho bed of tho river thirty feet and an eight-foot concreto nbutmont will bo placed on top of them.
