PENETRATION SYSTEM
t v' nH ," "' I

Tho modern farmer measures the
value or his spraying by the results
ho secures. Ho sprays to protect his
fruit and trees from insect and fung
ous diseases. A satisfactory spraying
system must glvo this protection with
the least expenditure of money and of
labor.
The keynote to successful spraying
Is thoroughness, and thoroughness
menus one hundred per cent of clean
fruit. Every wormy or scabby apple,
every curled or scaly peach tree In
creases tho cost of production and
lessens the quantity of marketable
fruit.
Wliile most of tho peBts occur on
the surface of foliage and bark, with
in easy reach of the spray, a groat
many are located within cracks nnd
crevices, uuder bud-scales, and in tho

calyx cup; or are bo oily that they
aro hard to wet. In tho matter of
practical control It is these protected
pests which must be reached. The
spray must wet through the wool of
the woolly aphis, reach the aphis eggs
behind the swelling buds, thoroughly
coat scales and fungous spores, wet
the orchard mites hiding In tho Inner
most crevices of tho bark, and place
arsenic for the codling worm beneath
the fleshy stamens of the apple blos
som. Any spraying system that will
reach these pests, will easily control
those on the exposed surface. Thor
oughness in spraying, therefore. Im
plies penetration.
The method which, in our experi
ence, has proved the most effective in
producing theoo results calls for tho
following equipment: 1. A nozzle
which will produce a coarse penetrat
ing spray. 2. A crook. 3. A high pres
sure pump. 4. A "tower" for tall trees.
In general, spray nozzles aro of two
kinds; the hollow-stream, and tho
solid-stream types. The former, var
iously known as the mist, whirl, or
disk nozzlo, breaks up the liquid into
fine particles which leave the nozzle
aa a hollow cone of spray. Obviously
such minute particles lose their mo
mentum, because of the resistance of
tho air, and thus nozzles of tho mist
typo have but a short range. They
aro, therefore, not adapted to a sys
tem of spraying requiring penetration.
Tlie solid-stream nozzles UBcd for
spraying aro commonly known as bor
deaux nozzles. In these a stream of
liquid is forced against a deflecting lip
which produces a fan-shaped, coarse
driving spray. Not until it reaches
some distanco from the nozzlo docs
this stream break into drops and these
retain their penetrative power at long
range. Such nozzles aro (suitable for
a penetrative sjstom of spraying

blossoms. Effective spraying calls for
a downward directed spray. With a
straight rod this downward direction
is attained only by the falling spray,
and Buch spray has lost Its penetrative
powor When tho nozzlo is Joined to
tho rod by n crook, the spray can bo
thrown downward, squarely Into the
desired places.
Not fill partB of tho tree, of
courso, can be reached by a down

makes it easil possible to point in
any other direction, also. Any sort
of spraying will reach the easy places;
tho crook Is needed to put tho spray
into tho difficult places.
The crook, furthermore, very great
lj le'ssens tho labor of spraying by its
lifting action when spraying down
ward. Tho back action of a bor
deaux nozzle, at 5!G0 pounds pressure,
amounts to nenrly throe pounds.
Without tlio crook this recoil is added
to tho weight of tho rod nnd the hose.
With tho crook tho back action, oper
ating at an angle at the end of the
extension rod, lifts the rod and re
lieves tho operator of most of the
weight,
Tho purpose of high pressure Is two
fold. It assures quickness of applica
tion, and it gives ponctratlon to the
spray. Doubling tho pressure practi
cally halves tho tlmo required to
Bpray. With a given pump, it takes
about twico as long to spray ut CO
pounds ns If tho spraying wore dono
nt 100 pounds, or four tlmeB bb long
as if tho work were done at 200
pounds. In each case, the samo
uniouut of spray material is required
to cover a tree.
High pressure means as much
pressure as tlio pump will produce.
The Ideal high pressuro Is 250 pounds.
Moro than this is not needed. Loss
than 250 pounds pressure can produce
an efllcient spray, provided extra time
and nttcntion bo given to every part
of tho tree. Even the hand pump,
working at 75 pounds, can produce
perfoct spray, if the nozzlo is he)d
close enough to every twig and to
every crack and crevice A high pres
sure furnishes a sweeping spray, hav
ing a range effective for many foot,
and assures thoroughness of applica
tion. With a pressuro of 250 pounds,
branches flvo to ten feet from Qiu
nozzlo cun bo effectively reached,
since tho spray forces its way through
tho foliage. If the pump does not
work steadily, ns would bo indicated
by u fluctuating pressuro gauge, It is
not tho average pressure that deter
mines how well the application is
made, but the lowest pressure re
corded. When trees are over 13 feet tall
their tops should be sprayed from an
elevation aud not from tho ground.
Usually a dotachablo platform or
"tower" is built over tho spray wagon,

and Is provided with a walst-hlgh rail
ing, or with a straddlo built llko a
saw-horse, to enablo the operator to
reach out over tho trees. The lower
part of the troo, however, should be
llnished from tho ground.
Wlion spraying a treo, the operator
begins ut the tips of the branches,
stroking down tho branchos. first on
ono side, then on tho other. As the
spraying progresses ho passes around
tlio tree, repeating the stroking on the
remaining brandies. With a good
equipment, on trees less than 15 feet
In diameter, such swooping from the
tips of tho branches down will drive
tlio spray through most of tlio treo
so that groups of branches can bo
sprayed at ono tlmo and no particular
attention need bo given to the inner
portion of the treo. The stroking
movements Hliould not bo too rapid or
they become tiring to tho operator
When trees aro so small that thov
can bo sprayed from tho ground it is
advlsablo to complete each treo before
passing on to tho next. When the
trees are larger, so that it In dllllcult
to drag the horse around sideways It
Is bettor to spray that half of the
treo nearest tho outfit, leaving tho
other half to bo sprayed on tho re
turn trip. Most of tho high pressure
pumps which aro In use today use
somo sort of a gasollno onglno as tho
source of powor.
