Fire Fifty Greeks,
Import Fifty Italians
The national complexion of the
Union Pacific track employes nt North
Platte and on "Sections nearby, under
went n change. Tuesday whan fifty
Greeks employed on that class of work
wero discharged and an equal number
of sons of sunny Italy imported to take
their places. Tho Greeks had received
no implication that they wero to bo
"fired," and when told Tuesday that
their services were no longer required,
they were considerably stunned; and
more so when they found that the
Italians were on the spot to taku their
places.
The reason given tho Greeks for
their discharge was that thoy did not
do enough work; that tho Italians were
more speedy. ,
Twenty-five of tho imported men
wero giyan worK in the local yards,
the romaindor wore sent out to sec
tions between here and Julesburg. Tho
Greek colony in North Platto is now
reduced to about sixty men.
Arrested on Charge
of Stealing Barn,
The brotherhood of the Episcopal
church met Monday -evening nt the
church to complete the organization and
to elect permanent officers. Ac this
meeting the constitution and by-laws
wero approved and adopted, and tho
organization was named tho Episcopal
brotherhood. Permanent officera were
elected as follows: .President, Rich
mond Birge, vice-president, Dr. Red
flold; secretary nnd treasurer, Horton
Munger; executive committee, J. S.
Hoagland. F. E. Dullard and J. Q.
Wilcox; chaplain, Denn J. J. Bowker.
Several other committees wore ap
pointed to do some special work.

A case was filed Tuesday afternoon in
Justice P, IT. Sullivnn'a court against
Henry Giese, John Giese, Joseph Giese
nnd Arthur Giese charging them with
stealing nnd receiving stolen property.
On the first count they nro charged
with tho theft of about 1000 feet of
pine lumber nnd using it in the construc
tion of a barn. The value of the lumber
is fixed at ?45 and Carl Schmidt is the
complaining witness. 'In the second
count they are charged with receiving
stolen property with the knowledge
that'.it was stolen.
Tho men appeared Tuesday evening
in the justico court and entered into
nppearanco bonds to appear on March
20, on which date the case will be
brought up for preliminary hearing.
Henrv Giese is the father of the other
three, and they all live in tho Maxwell
vicinity. Mr. Geiso owns sevoral sec
tions of land unci ench of tho sons is a
landowner. Mr. Gt'ise was convicted
about four years ago of stealing cattle
and was sentenced to the penitentiary,
but was later paroled and "the parole is
still in effect. The Giese ranch is Idea
ted adjoininc the Schmidt farm, which
is not occupied. The ham was built on
the Schmidt place and in the complaint
it is alleged that the men toro down the
barn and used the lumber in construction
of a barn on their own premises. A case
entitled the State of Nebraska vs. John
Geise was filed last week in the county
court charging him with destruction of
property, but this enso has been dis
missed and has been consolidated wifh
the case in the justice court.
Clarence Tollefsen, who had been
taking treatment a, the North Platte
general hospital, returned to his home
in Sutherland Wednesday.

Frank Taylor and Henry Nunn, of
St. Paul, Nebr., were visiting in the
city Tuesday afternoon to attend a
hearing in tho county court.

W. T. Beery, master mechanic of
this division, arrived in the city yester
day morning from Grand Island and
spent the day . looking after companv
matters.
Frank Smith left yesterday morning
for Nampa, Ida., after spending several
months with his parents residing soutii
of the city. He is an engineer atNampa
but broke his ankle last fall and was
compelled to come homo to recover
from his injuries.
Mrs. H. G. Fleishman returned yes
terday morning from a visit of several
days with relatives in Kansas City,
Omaha and other points. Her sister,
Miss Dora Donovitz of Kansas City, re
turned with her and will spend some
time here visiting.
Frank Turpie, of Meringo, la., for
merly of this city, arrived the first of
the week and will visit here for some
time with relatives and friends. He
loft here some time ago and haa been
engaged in farming in the Munigo vicinity.
