Fire Damages Fire
men's Headquarters.
A bad firo broke out shortly before
10 o'clock Wednesday evening in the
back rooms over the Ilinmnn garage in
tho rooms occupied by the firemen.
The bnck roein where tho firemen's trnp
door is located was practically gutted
by tho finmes. All the rooms abovo the
garage were more or lees damaged by
smoke and the fire spread some into ono
of the other bnck rooms.
Just how tho firo was started is not
known and some contend that it started
from defective electric wiring, but in
dications would bIiow that it started in
the bed in tho room. The bed wasjfirst to
burn and all tho bed clothes and slats
were burned. It is also reported that some
of tho men were in tho rooms a few
minutes before the fire was discovered
and and thut they wore lying on the bed
smoking. The room was in flames be
fore tho fire wuh discovered nnd one of
tho men in the garage smelled the
burning wood and turned in the alarm.
The department was called at once
and attempted to go up the front stairs
and apply the chemicals but were unable
to do so on account of tho smoke. Water
was then turned on the flamos both
from the front and tho rear, some of
tho men fighting from the roof of the
back room of the garage. A large
crowd gathered to watch the firo and
from the amount of smoke it was
thought to be much more dangerous fire
that it proved out to be.
Tho need of a paid regular fire depart
ment is strongly emphasized in this.
That a firo can start and get under
headway enough to cause so much dam
age in tec very rooms occupied by the
firemen is a deplorable fact. A regular
department would bo much more care
ful and guard against fire in their own
rooms, as well as bo on tho job in case
a firo broke out. Then too, they would
be trained to fight tho flames and would
be able to work more systematically.
