Start Geographical Course.
The eighth grades of the city Bchools
have Btartcd on a course in the geog
raphy of Nebraska this week. Mime
ograph outlines were prepared by the
superintendent and copies sent out to
each pupil. The class will use Condra's
geography of Nebraska for reference
but will work out the outlines from
many sources. The course is in prac
tically ovary city eighth grade school in
Nebraska and was inaugurated here
about four years ago but the equip
ment this year will be bettor than ever.
The university of Nebraska Depart
ment of Geography hns sent speci
mens of Nebraska minerals and rocks,
and outline maps of the state have
been secured. A study will be mado
of the different geological areas and
the industries typical of each, together
with tho linos of transportations and
the chief articles of commerce. Later
in the year the course will include a
brief study of Lincoln county and the
vicinity of North Platto. Tho eighth
grade teachers arc Miss Watts, Miss
Murray and Miss Smith.

Mrs. James Jessup is reported re
covering nicely from her operation of
two weeks ago.
The four-year-old daughtor of Mr.
nnd Mrs. A. F. O'DonnolIof Sutherland,
was brought to the hospital Wednesday
to roceivo treatment for an infected
knee.
Mrs. Howard Simns, of Wellfieot,
is reported recovering nicely from her
operation of a fow weeks ago.
Robert McMurray, who had his foot
amputated two weeks ago at the hospi
tal, Is reported 'getting along nicely.
Mrs. F. E. Peterson, who was opera
ted upon two weeks ago at tho hospital
has recovered and returned Wednesday
to her homo in Staploton.
Mr. Carlton, who was operated upon
a fow days ago by Dr. F,red J. Wurtelo,
is reported getting along nicely.

Martin Myers, of Paxton, arrived in
tho city Wednesday for a short visit
with friends. ,

miles north of tho city, was in Wednes
day looking after business matters.

a jury and Alva cumu over to visit

V. Pagott, of this city, left yester
, day for Paxton where ho will open up
a blacksmitlung shop. Ho was formerly
employed In tho Union Pacific shops but
was lot out in tho recent reduction of
force and will now engage In business
for himself.

Silver King Convicted
and Sentenced
Silver King was couvicted by a jury
Wednesday of the charge of assaulting
U. Inenaga, a Japanese laborer, with
the intent of killing him. Tho caso
went to the jury at 10:45 in the morning
and they reported at 1:30 with n vordict
of guilty. Tho sontonce Is an indeter
minate sentence of from ono to twenty
years in the statopenUcntiary.
The caso was prosecuted by County
Attorney Georgo N. Gibbs and Mayor
E. H. Evans appeared in defense. Tho
plaintiff and Miss Helen Severn of
Denver wero tho chief witnesses for
the prosecution. The defense put up a
hard fight on tho grounds that Miss
Severn was an accomplice of Silver
King's to assist in robbing Inenngo of
his monoy, and that she later turned
state's evidence to exonerate herself.
S. Kai, a Japanese interpreter from
Cheyenne, assisted in the trial by in
terpreting for the state's witness. His
work was of great assistance as he is
well educated and speaks very good
English.
King was sentenced to from ono to
twenty years athard labor and his term
will depend upon his own actions. The
matter lies with tho state board of par
dons and sentence is commuted at its
option and discretion.
