A little boy three years of ago was found Tuesday ovening at ubout 6:30 wandering around alone on East Front street near the North Platte produce house. He seemed porfectly contented and wns pullingnlittlo wagon around, seemingly enjoying it veiy much. He wns picked up by a larger boy and taken to Tramp's grocery store and an attempt was mado to find where ho belonged. He could not talk, other than to say "mamma" nnd that he was cold. Ono of tho. employes called up tho telephone oluco and uskod if any ono had inquired thorn for a littlo boy and found that no one had missed him yet. In a few minutos thoy were called by tho child's mother, Mrs. McIIugh on West Front street, and she came to the storo after tho boy Ho had been playing out in the yard and wandered away and was ubout a mile from home whan found. Mr. nnd Mrs. T. O. Gill of the Gar field vicinity, arrived in tho city tho first of tho'week for n visit of a week or so with their daughter Mrs. S. M. Derryborry. PONDEROUS SEA ELEPHANTS. They Have Two Foot Trunks and Flip pers Tipped With Claws. That which is bellovcd to bo tho Inst herd of sea elephants known to exist Is to be found at Guadalupe Island, off tho west coast of Mexico. In tho herd there are now only about thirty speci mens. Tho sea elephant Is nn important link in tho chain of evolution nnd is tho largest of all fin footed nnlmals. Tho adult initio Is nbout twenty-two feet in length and Is nbout eight feet high when propped up on his front flippers In a natural position. Theso great bulls weigh from two to three tons and have n trunk, or proboscis, which, when relaxed, hangs down over tho mouth about two feet. In tho end of this tho nostrils nro plnced rather wide apart, and when thoy breathe their whole" mass trembles In tiny unduln- tlons to tho very end. Tho flippers nro thick nnd tipped with heavy claws. There Is n tall nbout one foot nnd n half long, sepa rated horizontally In two divisions. This tall acts as n propeller, to resist the huge creature when lie conies In through the breakers. lie hoists his back dippers nnd tail so as to catch tho full sweep of tho wave. and then allows himself to be washed up on the bench. Coarse, bristly hair grows sparsely rrom tno uncle along tue uouy. nnd n tough protecting crust of flesh reaches like n shield from the lower jaw down over tho chest nnd round to the back of tho neck. This Mbllke nffalr is nature's provision for protection In time of battle. Tho mnle fights vi ciously In tho mating season, nnd the chest protector prevents much loss of life. Sea elephants live on various kinds of small fish and use tho trunk to seize them with. Aftorwnrd the food Is transferred to tho mouth precisely ns elephants manage it. EGGS BY THE YARD. Korea Also Produces Oycters That Weigh Ten Pounds Each. While In the orient a correspondent had occasion to call on friends who lived near Seoul, the prlnclpnl city of Koren. lie tolls tho following story: One morning my hostess, while giv ing orders for tho neccssnry things from tho market for the day. mention ed four ynrds of eggs. I nccompnnled the stewnrd tlint dny on his mnrketlng trip, nnd when tho eggs were asked for the grocer reached down in a bar rel nnd brought out the end of n Inrgo straw rope. IIo measured off the required length on the counter. Just ns n dry goods store clerk would measure off cloth, rolled It up nnd put It In the basket without a smile. Tho eggs were lnsldo of this hollow strnw rope, with a string tied on the outsIde''o'f It be tween each egg. This effectually pro tected tho eggs from being' broken whllo handling. Another day my hostess ordered two "small" oysters for dinner. This or der caused mo to wonder n little, for I know that there would be seven to dine, besides tho servants, but when the oysters arrived all wns explained, for ono weighed four and a half pounds, nnd tho other five pounds. On Inquiry I was informed that some of the oysters on the northern side of Koren weigh ns much as ten pounds. Chrlstlnn Science Monitor. Bathing and Bellowing. Primitive mnn boiled his wnter with hot stones. That wns not the only use ho mndo of them, at any rate. If he was a Scythian. The Scythian pruc tlco described by Herodotus hns been claimed by some ns the first recorded enso of smoking. Ilnvlng spoken of n kind of hemp thnt grew In tho coun try, Herodotus proceeds: "Now. tho Scythians, taking tho seed of this hemp, go Into their tents and then throw tho seed upon the stones heated wulto hot. As It is thrown on It Is burnt Into smoke, producing so nnich that no Greek vapor lmth could sur pass It And the Scythians, delighting In It. bellow. This takes the place of washing for them." It seems ns though thoy had discovered the Turkish bath and tho cigarette. The Widow's Dower. It Is certain that 'dower," tho estate for life which the widow acquires nt her hu.slmnd'H death, was not known among tho early Saxons. In the laws of King Edmund the widow Is directed to bo supported wholly out of the per sonal estnte. Dower Is generally as cribed to the Normans, but It was first introduced Into the feudal system by Emperor Frederick 11.. who was con temporary with the English Henry III., ubout 1250. Tho Usual Way, "It would never do for the furmers to Ret Into tho financial business of the nation." "Why not?" "From force of habit they would al ways bo waiting to water their stock." nalthuore American. Homo Finance. "Wombat, loan mo $5. It's for nn In vestment you aro lutorested In."
