A number of tho men at tho railroad
shops will spend tho holidays out of
town. Several passes have been issued
to Omaha, Denver and Cheyenne to
the shop men.
A. H. Becker, former telegraph
operntor at Potter, has been transferred

injured, tho wagon demolished, but
Walker escaped with slight injuries.
Tho railroad shops were shut down
Saturday and Sunday on account of
lack of work. Engines Nos, 355 and

minimum thickness required for storage
purposes. Tho company hopes to begin
tho ice harvest January first, but tho
date of
weather
courso depends upon tho
conditions within tho noxt
week.
Tho Union Pacific is holding au ac
cummulated surplus of thirty-four
million dollars, which is part of tho
profit accruing out of Bales of the
Northern Pacific and Great Northern
railroad shares. Aa this BUrplua is not
needed for now lines or physical better
ments of existing linns, it is' probable
that the oxecutivo committee will order
a "melon" cutting.
Emphasizing necessity for further
action by tho federal government to
provido greater safety for travelers and
employes upon tho railroads, tho Inter
state commorce commission in its
annual roporb makes vigorous recom
mendations for additional powers over
the phyfilcul construction and operation
of tho roads. Tho commission also rec
ommends that it bo given authority to
suporviso the issue of railroad securi
ties and some measure of control over
the capitalization. It is probable that
congress will so amend the existing law
as to give tho commission the authority
thoy ask.
