Mayor Vetoes Whistliug Ordinance.
City Cierk Temple recaived a letter
yesterday from Mayor Evans vetoing
the ordinance passed at the Tuesday
evening meeting of tho city council re
garding the whistling of locomotives
in tho city limits. The stato laws pro
vide that the trains ahall whistle for
crossings and when someono is on tho
track, and the ordinance as it was
passed would do away with all other
whistling.
Tho mayor cited that tho signals
used are many of them very important
and nro for tho sutcty of life. That
to do away with thorn would cripple the
signaling service moro than It would
help the public by doing away with tho
noise. Tlie engineers do not blow the
whistle merely for pastime but that all
signajs have some meaning. He also
showed that such n law vnuld do away
wi th the shop whistle and with the
curfew and noon whistle at tho city
water works.
