As everyone probably knows, tho nroclamation has been issued setting apart Thursday, Nov. 27, as tho day for universal observance unuer me star and stripes of giving thanks for the blessings of the past year. The chan ces are that we all could observo this day without the proclamation, and also that wo would all airreo upon the day, but what executive would miss so good an opportunity as this to say good things about the manncrin which things have been going on in the last year, and also to perhaps put before the public a "brain child" that may live long after they have gone to the home of their forefathers or foremothera! But, seriously, it should bo a timo of general thanksgiving andUho union ser vices at the church are as much for each nnd everyone of us as is the turkey, duck or other fowl that wa will nil enjoy to our fullest extent. If we have nothing tangible for which to be thankful, let us try and conjure up something wo have experienced during the past year examino it as to its merits, and observo not only Turkey day but a real Thanksgiving day. If we ordor ourj turkoy over the phone let us bo just as thankful as though we wandered into the forests and captured it. Our modern blessings are as much deserving of recognition ns were the home-spun garments and contemporary benefits of the days when Thanksgiving day was invented. P. M. Cold Outdoors Warm Indoors PERFECTION OIL Company ' ' Ojmaha Barrett's Warning. John Barrett, director general of the Pan-American union, in an address de livered before the foreign trade com mittee of tho Chicago Association of Commerce a few days ago, delivered a forcible and apparently past due warn ing on the subject of American inter vention in Mexico, holding that such a courso would be politically and com mercially unwise and would cost this country heavily both in liyes and money. Speaking on this subject he said: "Securo in their feelings of national strength, the people of this nation do not appreciate that thoy are faco to face with a crisis which may precip itate the country into a long, cruel non-patriotic and inglorious guerrila warfare which will rcquiro an army of at least 200,000 men, will cost $1,000,000 a day for thousands of days, and will start a new pension list that will cost another million dollars a day for the tho next fifty years. All tho Amorican lives and dollsrsjthat have been lost through this civil con flict nro small indeed, compared to the number of American men and soldiers and dollars of government funds which would be lost in military occupation of Mexico." Mr. Barrett is ouoted by the Inter- Ocean as saying with emphasis that contrary to the common misunderstand ing the Latin-American republics ore not commercially hostile to this country and that tho opportunities of American business men in Central and South America are practically limitlss. But he assorted, these Latin-American re publics are opposed to intervention by us In Mexico, and this he knew from his own porsonol knowledge. In fact, Intervention might completely neutra lize the moral and commercial benefits of tho Pannma canals. Thoro is an uneasy feeling through out the country that tho policy of tho administration will force tho United States to intervene in Mexico, without orginally intending to do so, and that intervention, meditation, or meddling in any form aro bound to breed a crop of troubles that will pester us for years and years to come.
