BTUAItT) Tho coiMng moth, which is by far tho worst applo pest, may bo qulto effectively combatted by thorough spraying with soma arsenical poison just after tho blossoms fall. Arsenate of lead used at tho rato of two pounds to fifty gallons of water is giving bet ter satisfaction thau parla gieon bo; causo It adheres better and does not injuro tho follago. TJio moths emergo early and the fomalo soon begins to lay Its cgBS. Theso aro not as has been commonly supposed upon tho fruit, but largely on tho under side of tho leaves. Caro ful studies havo shown that about nlnetcon-twentieths of tho eggs are doposlted upon tho leaves, tho balanco being upon tho bark and fruit Tho earliest deposited oggs hatch In about ten days. Whiletho later ones take only about half as long. As soon as the larva hatches It begins to mi grate toward the fruit, and having reached it usually entors at tho point of least resistance, which in its imma turo stago of development is through tho calyx opening. A knowledge of tho lifo history of this pest enables the orchardist to spray hlB treos in telligently. Ho knows that tho weak point of resistance Is In tho calyx or bl&w end of tho fruit Horo then 1b tho point of attack. It ho can fill the calyx end of each applo upon tho tree with a poisonous spray, tho most of tho larvao will bo destroyed beforo thoy havo an opportunity to gain ac cess to tho interior structuro of tho applo. Honco ho should spray within tho first week or ton days after tho blossoms fall or beforo the calyx closes up and tho applo begins to point downward. Tho nozzlo used should throw tho liquid with enough force to drive the spray liquid into tho ond of each apple. Ono thorough spraying at this tlmo has been found to give over 90 per" cent of worm froo apples. A second spraying three or four weeks later Is recommended. Tho first spraying for codling moth can bo combined with the second for applo scab, by adding tho arsenical poison to tho bordeaux mixture. Tho curcullo and applo maggot aro much moro difficult pests to combat Frequent and thorough sprayings has demonstrated tho possibility of very largely controlling tho injury caused by tho applo and plum curcullo. Till ago and sunlight aro two effective aids In tho suppression of tho curdullo, as is also tho destruction of all fallen fruit Thero is no known remedy for tho applo maggot Preventive measures cuch ns tho destruction of all fallen fruit are tho only moans of suppres sion that can be employed. Of courso good tillage and Judicious pruning and Bprnylng materially aid In lessening tho Injury to tho fruit Arsenical poisons aro not effective. The latter should bo attacked when the. young aro moving about or havo not us yet secreted a scaly covering. Thero Is no very effective remedy for wood Infesting InsoctB llko the round-headed applo treo borer. Tho orchardist may adopt cortain protec tive measures such as exclusion or re pulsion. Tho mature beotlo may bo prevented from depositing Its eggs by wrapping tho lower portion of tho treo trunk with tar paper, building paper or veneering. In placing confidenco in such a preventlvo measuro thero is always danger that tho bectlo may find somo opening ltto which she can thrust her oggs and boforo ono realUen It tho treo Is Infested with borors. Most of tho washes aro of an alkallno naturo con sisting of soaps, or lyes to which car bollc acid Is frequently added to givo It nn offonslvo odor. Many commer cial washes havo ut various tlmos been put on the market, tho use of which It wob claimed would securo immunity from tho borer. In many cases theso proprietary waBhca havo been known to bo harmful to tho bark of tho treo, in boiiio instnncoa tho Injury boing bo great as to kill tho treo. Tho safest and most effoctlvo mothod, all things considered, is that of going ovor tho young orchard trees twice each season, examining each treo carefully for tho presenco of borcra. When detected thoy should bo at onco removed with a sharp knife. After removing tho castings from tho tunnol opening, tho wlro Is pushed upwards or down wards In the tunnel, as tho caso may be, until tho borer Is encountered; in this way much cutting and conse quent Injury to tho treo may be avoided. LATE WORK WITH STRAWBERRY PLANT Cultivation Should Be Continued Until Compelled to Stop by Cold Weather. (By M. N. EDQERTON.) Wo Bhould still continue to keep tho cultivators going in tho strawborry bed. In fact wo discontinue tillage only when compelled to do so by rains or freezing weather. Wo consider this work of special importance if tho fall season bo In any wlso dry. Not only Is this tlllago nec essary In order that proper moisture conditions bo preserved, but tho sur face should bo kept loose, so that air may bo freely admitted, conserving those conditions favorablo to tho pro cesses of soil lifo which chango tho elements of plant food from an insolu ble to n soluble form, that is to say put It in such shapo that it may bo assimilated by tho plants. Thorn aro many who fall to recog nlzo the Importance of this lato tlllngo, or, recognizing Hh Importance, fall to put their knowledgo into practice. Having started in well we bcllovo in running well to the end. .Stray weeds should bo kept out also. They aro n nuisance. Kven un der the best of culture thoy will creep in, seeming llko "Jonah's gourd" to grow up in a night. With tho matted row systems weeds nro likely to give no end of trouble if the Eoll is badly invested with weed seed. This small lato growth, though seemingly not of any significance, as sumes great proportions during tho spring months if not removed, nnd there Is no tlmo qulto so favorablo as tho lato fall months In which to do tho work. There la another task In connection with strawberry growing that should not bo neglected at this tlmo of the year: surplus runners should bo re moved. An unnecessary plant is aa much out of place In a straw berfy bed ns a weed. All of this work nnd caro calls for stlck-at-it-lvonesa.
