In handling the npplo crop success
fully It la important to hnvo a suffi
cient number of ladders, receptacles,
sorting tables and nil accessories on
hand. Tho early apple must bo gath
ered nnd shipped promptly. Thoy
may bo sont to market In one-third,
one-half, or pno bushel boxes or
baskots; but a llttlo later thoso small
packages aro not wanted and tho
throo bushel barrel Is tho proper
thing.
Prices aro most always good at tho
beginning of tho applo season, oven
for green cookers, and this induced
Bomo to pick and ship half-grown lien
Davis and other winter varieties. Dut
experlonco has proven that this in
folly, as tho markot 1b soon overload
ed with poor, groen applos and tho
returns aro next to nothing.
This glut fo apt to continuo as
long as tho warm weather lasts; bo
causo thero aro so many neglected
orchards neither sprayod or cultivat
ed, in which tho applos begin falling
from tho trcps early; and thoy aro
picked and rushed to markot to avoid
loss from this cause.
In picking applos Bomo prefer tho
uso of baskatB while others prefer
sack3. Ilowovor, thoy both havo their
advantages nnd disadvantages. Tho
advantage of using' a basket lies en
tirely in tho fact, thut tho apples aro
caroiuiiy piacoa in tno snmo
thoy aro not bruised nnd tho blooms
If thero bo any aro not rubbed oft.
Tho objections to tho baskots aro
that thoy aro not so handy nB tho
sacks and that caroloss pickers nro
disposed to toss applos Into them as
thoy hang on n limb or 'stand upon
tho ground Bovoral foot away.
Tho advantage of using a sack is
that it can bo slung ovor tho shoul

sowed into tho edgo of tho mouth and
partly nrbuud tho opening, allowing
tho picltor to cuslly carry It and uso
both hands.
Tho objections aro that tho blooms
nro llkoly to bo rubbed oft tho fruit
and tho shifting of tho sack puts
many enmll bruises on tho apples
whero thoy rub ngnlnst each other
which, with light colorod or dollcuto
sklunod varieties is quickly noticed.
I profer tho baskots. My baskots

basket from tho limbs, thus enabling
tho picker to ubo both hands.
In picking apples overy spoclmon
should bo handled as carefully as if
it woro an ogg. I usually havo my
apples picked, and piled under tho
trees in tho shndo and tako tho bar
rels to tho orchard and pack as fast
as possible. When tho barrols arc
filled and headod I haul, to tho shed
and stow away In as cool a placo as
possible, until I get onough to fill a
car.
Tho packing should bo dono by an
oxpcrloncod hand as this Is of great
Importanco and Is always tho danger
point. A layer of uniform apples
even In slzo and color should bo
placed on tho lnsldb of tho barrel and
anothor layer of similar fruit put on

top and tho facers and tho barrel
filled with fruit froo from defects of
any kind. It is very important that
tho barrol bo well shaken oach tlmo
a basketful of fruit Is put In as tho
fruit will bo tight In tho barrol and
roqtjlro less pressing of tho head and
consequently Iobs bruising of tho
fruit,
Tho mnrkotB nro not filled with an
overproduction of good fruit. It is
tho ovor-productlon of poor fruit that
knocks down tho prico of good fruit.
Thoro Is novor n tlmo that n largo
woll-maturod applo will not bring a
fancy prico In nny markot. And when
nothing but this cIubs is put into n
barrel a handsome profit Is realized.

Dried Corn.

Experlenco Is Indeed a dear teachor,

to uso tho household money wisely.
Haphazard buying Is most oxtrava
gant and a few lessons in useless buy

n household sclcnco and tho buying of
meats is ono of extromo Importance.
Wo aro passing tho tlmo when It Is
considered parsimonious to bo called

unpractical. '
One, of tho first things for a woman
to learn In buying 1b to regulato her
wants to fit hor purse. It takes real
self denial to deny ones self tho at
tractive dollcaclcs, and conflno horself
to tho urgent needs of tho family,
oven shopping nnd marketing will de
velop self-control and character.
Tho woman who pays her bills
promptly will get hotter servlco overy
tlmo from her merchant, for If ho
has to wait Indefinitely for bills to
bo paid he Is apt to charge interest
by adding a cent horo or there which
infra month or two swells tho bills
considerably.
Tho ready money to the merchant
means a great deal, for his accounts
must bo settled promptly 'if ho gets
good and prompt returns from tho
big markets.
A prepared list mado out before
going out to markot will help ono to
keop within limit ns some womon
want to buy overy thing they see and
memory falls them of tho necessaries
if a list Is not at hand.
Anothor way market men oven with
a slow paying costumcr, is to send
second rato articles and charge first
prices. So It pays to bo prompt with
tho baying of bills.
When buying meats seo that it is of
good bright color and well marbled
with fat. Thq weight Is a, good test
for fruits like oranges, lemons and
grapo fruit. Perishable foods shquld
never bo bought in largo quantities.
