SbVeral years ngo tho United States government anil all scientific people ad vocated the building of reservoirs in arid districts that there might bo evap oration and the rainfall bo increased. But today whnt is the govornmont doing? Reclaiming the desert and taking the wator out of Nebraska's greatest river to do It with, oh? Taking away an ovnpornting surface from 1,200 to 1.C00 square miles of water and turning tho water out upon land further west. My ink well loses about a hnlf inch of ink per day by evaporation, and it has an evaporation surfuce only ono inch square, If (ho evaporation from tho Platto rivor would cquid that from my Ink well wo can plainly boo that ono day's ovap qrntfon from one squuro mile would bo 2,050,52.1,800 cubic inches of water that would bo,carried into tho air in the fornvof vapor. If we figure the evapora tion of tho wholo Platto river wo will have a string of figures verging on in finity. But each figure represents a cor; tain amount of rain which God has so nrronged that when taken up us yapor again returns to tho earth. God in His Infinite wisdom so nt ranged tho streams of water oyer this globe that their united evaporation to gether with that of vogotation would" supply tho earth with umplo rainfall. ' But what has mun done? In Nebras ka alone h- has taken out of the ntmos phora four trillion cubic inchos of wator. Is It uny wonder that our corn burns up just when wo expect a bumpor crop? What right has man to meddle with God's 'groat system of equalization? Does tho toxt not say, "What God hath joined together let no mail put as nndor?" ' If man by his Irrigation projects for the reclamation of tho western desert disturbs tho cqulibrlum of God's bal ances is not it about time that God's people take a hand and restore to tho proper placo that part which has bce'n torn asunder? I, for ono, say put tho Platto river back in its chnnnol. Lot liar minglo hor evaporation with tiiat of tho Ro publican, tho three Lnupsund Niobrara and tho Missouri, then will the equlli brium of natural balances bo restored and tho fair stato ot Nobruska will yield hor crpps as of yoro.
