Tho shortage in tho supply of moat-producing animals, too, is steadily becoming grentor, and tho country is warnod that it is facing a period of short production of meat. In the last six years thore has boon a1 decline of more than 30 por cent frt tho number of beof cattle in the United States, according to the department, and alroady during tho first three month's of this year thero has been a decrease of 15 per cent in tho number ot meat animals killod undor government super vision when compared with the same throe months of 1912. Estimates of tho department givo tho number of beef cattle in tho United States on January 1, 1907, as 51,500,000, and at tho bd ginmngof thoprosontyoaras3G,030,000. Prices paid for cattle, sheep, lanitfs and hogs lastyear were much higher the preceding yoar.
