Prof. Willis L. Mooro, chiof of tho
weather bureau since 1895, and an ap
pointee of the Cleveland administration,
was summarily removed from office
Wednesday by President WiUon. His
resignation recently had boon accapted
to tako effect July 31, but after an in
vestigation of his alleged efforts to be
'como sccrotary of agriculture in tho
present cabinot gravo irregularity were

his acceptance of tho resignation, dis

City Officers Elect
Take Their Seats.
Tuesday evening there was a change
in a number of tho city officers, Mnyor
Patterson rotiring after three years of
successful administration, and Everett
II. Evans assuming tho duties of
mayor. Other new officials inducted
Into office were Albert Schatz council
man from tho First wnrd, Dr. Drost
from the Second, J. II. Stone from tho
Third and Frank Martin from the
Fourth.
In retiring from the mayor's office,
Mr. Pnttorson briefly reviowod tho
work of the past two years, and espec
ially as to the satisfactory solution of
tho water question and tho present ex
cellent condition of tho plant. He com
monded the judgment and foresight of
tho outgoing council in dealing with the
important questions that had come be
fore that body for action.
After taking the oath of office-, Mayor
Evans announced tho following appoint
ments: John Frazier chief of police,
George N. Glbbs city attornoy, W. D.
Salisbury street commissioner, Dr.
Lucas aity physician, Chas. J. Mc
Namara city engineer, Joseph Wilson
court house police and Williads Hanson
high schcol police. Those appointments
wero unanimously confirmed. A. B.
Hoagland was elected president of the
council.
Chief Fraziur was delegated
power to seloct his assistants and
named Max Frioborg as ono of
tho
has
the
two. Tho special police in the Fourth
ward will he covered by tho regular
mon. Tho chiof will bo on duty from
G a. m. to G p. m., Freiberg will go on
at 1 p. m. and bd in sorvico until mid
night and tho third man will bo on duty
from six p. m. to six a. m., thus giving
the service of two men during jtho
hours of tho hoaviest work. Tho
officers will In the futuro be uniformed.
Mayor Evans also appointed the dif
ferent standing coram itteoa.
The new administration then began
its grind of business, issuing certificates
of service to several firemen who wero
entitled thereto, selected Tho Tribune
and tho Telegraph as the official papers,
issued a license to Poy Surbor as side
walk contractor and discussed a number
mntters relating to city affairs.

Building Operations
Start Out Briskly.
In touring the town ono evening this
woek fourteen houses in various stages
of coustruction wero noticed. In ad
dition to these, work is in progress
on the First ward school building,
and the McCabo business block. The
construction of these residences, the
school, and this block is only n portion
ot tho improvement work being done.
In all parts of the city one sees new ad
ditions to residence, houses -elevated
and higher foundations built, new
porches added and other improvements
made. Contractors and carpenters are
pushed with work, and It is evident
that the rush will continue throughout
tKo year.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Eshleman wero
called to Urbaha, 111., the fore part of
this week by the death of the tatter's
grandfather.
Mrs. Charles Yost who has been
Visiting her sister Mrs. Fred Barrett in
Greon Rivor for somo time, will return
tomorrow evening.
