Perhaps some of you can devlso a better name for thiB pastime, but I am sure every one who knows their "A, B. C's" can play it. Tho answers to all tho queries are made by simply using letters, and it will bo well for tho hostess to give several examples before beginning the contest: 1. Containing nothing. M T (empty). 2. This wood is smooth ly covered on both sides with pale bluo silk stretched tightly across and jBGwn together at tho edges. Prior to covering tho wood, how over, tho ribbon band that runs across tho center must bo sewn in its place 'and lt will bo noticed that it is tacked to tho silk so that It forms a scries To covet. Tho hostess gavo each girl a tnpo needlo threaded with bnby ribbon; thero wero four of roso color, four of bluo and four of lavender. Thero wero four card tables in tho living room, each covered with tho linen to match tho ribbons. Tho girl with bluo found their tablo, likewise tho others, and tho hostess passed charming "sowing com panions," mado of ribbon with tiny scissors, needlo book and emery; a safety pin waB attached to tho bow at tho bolt, so they were immediately pinned on and wero most appropriate souvenirs. In tho center of tho tables thero was a tray of needlcB, assorted sizes, and a Bpool of number aeventy thread. When tho boll rang, tho play, ers started to thread needlcB and stick them into a cardboard (I think bltB of flannel would bo better and easier). At the end of four minutes tho bell rang ngaln, score was taken and tho couple who had succeeded In thread ing tho most needles went to tho next table. Threo rounds of four minutes each completed this gamo and tho couplo having the highest scoro wero present ed with Bilk workbags.. "Progresslvo needles" was voted a great success. Next the hostess asked them to chooso sides, first appointing captains, and there were six on a side lined up and tho girls opposito each other wero partners for this contest; ono lino of girls hold big needles and those across from them had coarso threads; at a signal they rushed at each other and tho couplo who had their needlo threaded first received prizes of pa pers of needles and spools of thread. Tho winning couplo sat down and tho es( tried, tho samo thing over again., I think this" party "scheme coulH bo" carried out in tho evening and boys asked to bo tho girls' partners. I anY euro lt would bo loads of fun. Nuts to Crack. Why should a spider make a good correspondent? Ho drops a lino by every post. When is a carpenter like circum stances? When ho altera cases. This article would mako a nice pres ent for a man or it would be sure to find a reddy sale at a bazaar. NOTES cAom MMD0WBR00K V f ARM .wu Keep tho barns dry. Feed cattle with regularity. Calves should havo dally outdoor ex ercise. Soak parsley seed over night in lukowarni water. nSIow tho first mllo of an all day's trip; then crowd along. Sweet corn planted every two weckB will glvo a long succession. It is Just as necessary to fit a collar to a horse as it is to fit a shoo to the foot. Our American breeds fatten very roadily, making them Ideal markot poultry. Farmers ought to take a lesson from tho rooster that crows his respects to tho silo. i Sheep generally sell to tho best ad vantage when tho bunch 1b uniform as possible. Two parts oats and one of bran mako a well balanced ration for preg nant owes. All dead limbs from trees in tho orchard should go into tho brush heap or woodshed. Ollmeal is greatly relished by lambs and helps greatly in obtaining a fine finish for the market. A well kept garden is a Joy forever, becauso lt can bo made to yield good oatlng tho year around. A 100-ogg hen can no more lay 200 eggs in a year than an incubator can hatch 100 chicks from 50 eggs. A man connot work on boiled tur nips alono; neither can a horse work on a diet of straw and fodder. Sheep at six years of ago generally lose their teeth; hence they should be fattened and sold before this period. Well-managed poultry is preferable to farm crops, In that poultry will produce an income at all times of the yoar. Begin to fight vermin with the de parture of tho winter's snows. Thoy will always bo ready and waiting for long. Oat straw that is free from mold makes an excellent winter forage for mulos, young cattle and boarding horses. Aside from plenty of good food, tho cardinal wants of the dairy barn are good light, fresh air, cleanliness and varmth. When a bird becomes ill, separate it from tho rest of tho flock. By doing so tho spread of an infectious dis ease may bo averted. Whether well fed in stables or not, cows like something to pick on through tho day and corn fodder Is .good for this purpose. Always tio your team or put them in a barn when you go to town. It Is much choapor than having to buy a new harness and wagon. Tho natural color of butter is duo to tho following factors: Breed, feed vnd period of lactation. Study theso factors In handling your herd. Tho demand for good draft horses In nearly every state Is better than over before, and sound, well-formed animalB bring from $200 to $400 each. Aro you testing your seed for germ inating qualities? It is a simple mat ter, and tho state experiment station will send you full directions for doing It at home. Tho feeding of tho calf should bo uniform and regular. Do not feed lib erally today ond starve tho calf tomor row and expect it to make tho gains It would under the proper care. Men who are Inexperienced in al falfa growing should have forced on their attention tho Important lesson that it pays well to put a little labor on tho surface after removing each crop. Eggs intended for Incubation should novor bo subjected to a temperature bolow 40 degrees for any length of tlmo, aa tho germ will become chilled and dlo. Keep tho eggs in a tempera turo ranging from 45 to CO degrees until wanted for incubation. Novor handlo them with greasy hands, as tho grcaso closes up the pores in tho shell. v 5 EirZtma. Prune a littlo every year. Wash tho separator thoroughly. Feed the chicks little and often. Never mako a young horso pull all lt can. Plant an abundanco of beets to allow for grootjB. Let's not forget to whltowash tho hen house this spring. There's mora In tho caro of your fowls than in tho broed. The older tho egg tho loss Is that sweet, rich flavor notlcoablo. Measuro outyour grain according to tho work your horses aro doing, A good horao poorly cared for rare ly sells for what ho really Is worth. With tho growing pigs thrift, not hunger, should prompt to cxorclso. The success of tho dairy farm de pends upon tho "man behind tho COWB." nutter Is usually good or bad ac cording to tho process by which lt Is mado. A cross bred malo cannot bo re lied upon for producing uniform off spring. There is no profit in keeping a pig or any othor animal when thoro la no gain. Are the cows paying for tho food they consume? If not, thero aro thoso that will. Never feed dusty feed if you can avoid it,, but if you do, sprinkle It with water beforo feeding. Sand that will grow good crop3 of clover will grow, or can bo mado to grow almost anything. In butter-making use salt that will dissolve readily, otherwise your but Jer 1b likely to bo gritty. Tho cow that gives tho most milk when fresh Is not always tho best milker In a year's tlmo. Tho dairy cows, especially, will greatly relish and do well on tho odd turnips, bets and cabbage. Ono way of Increasing profits In dairy farming io to cut down tho hord to tho actual profit makers. When you breed full bloods, grades or natlvo stock, novor uso nn Imper fect animal for breeding purposes. Tho only successful hon houso is tho open front one that has at least one-third of the south sldo entirely open. Four quarts of good oats, mixed with warm water, mako a flno feed for mtho cow Just after tho now calf comes. On tho farm, as In other business, never undertake more than you can do at tho right tlmo and In tho proper manner. Whero hard coal is burned tho cin ders may bo saved and substituted for grit. Thoy are not half bad for this purpose. ' Tho difficulties in tho way of mak ing good butter may all bo overcome and good butter will always find a remunerative market. Ono reason why separators do not nlways do good work Is becauso thoy aro not set up right. Look well to that In tho very beginning. By actual experiment it has been found that by feeding nlfalfa hay with corn tho cost of fattening pigs has been decreased about one-half. Cow-testing associations aro being organized in many neighborhoods. Dajrymon aro boginning to seo tho wastefulness of working In tho dark. Indigestion is tho causa of more than half tho diseases of tho horse, and largely caused by Improper food and working horses on a full stomach. Horses should novor bo mado to eat moldy hay, aB nothing Is worso In leading to worrying, whistling and other derangements of tho wind. Skim milk, when fod In connection with grain, makes a very valuable food for hogs at all periods of tholr growth, but practically bo during tho earlier period. Tho farming business Is getting to bo a big proposition. Farm life of to day means moro than the dally round of chores, with tho long, Idlo winter spent reading tho almanac. From tho fact that so many good mares aro raising mulo colts, and bo many flno stalllona havo beon con certed Into carrlago horses of tho heavy harness typo, a veritable horso famine Is close at hand. Havo you planned to let tho small boy of tho family havo at least ono aero of land to plant and caro for, with tho prlvllego of using tho money ho may mako from tho products as ho may wish? Try lt. Tho plan has paid with others and lt ought to do well on your farm. INCREASING DEMAND Heavy Imported Stallion. Nearly nil of us who llvo on farms from 40 to 320 acres In size ralso ono or moro coltB every year. About half tho tlmo theso colts nro modi ocro nulmals, neither draft, rond, plow, nor general purpose anlnmlB, saya a Nebraska writer In tho Farm Progress. Most of us havo como to tho conclusion that tho big horso Is by far tho best animal to havo on tho farm, and yet wo pay but littlo atten tion to growing tho work horso of that ytpo. Power plowing Is many a long year nway from tho littlo farm. And thoro is a constant tondency to break up tho big half-farm, half-ranch of tho mlddlo west Into small allotments. Tho point I wnnt to mako 1b that thoro Is going to bo an lndohnlto do main! for heavy animals horses that aro big enough to pull a mower, a binder, a heavy plow and othor ma chinery without being exhausted at Jho endof q day's work. A big jiiaro or two and a slzablo big-boned stallion will mako lt easy for tho farmer of 1913 to havo a big draft team or two on his place by 1910. Tho stallion owners will got tho stallions Into tlio country if thero 1b enough of a demand for them. I am tired of raising cat-humpod, bcIs-sor-hocked littlo horses, weighing 1,000 and 1,200 pounds, and "kill ing thorn off" during tho crop sea aon. Wo might Just as onslly have big animals not too big, but strong enough and heavy enough to pull a 14-lnch plow through tho dirt. I havo seen ono neighborhood chango Its typo of farm horses on tlroly In n spaco of five years. An enterprising horso and mule buyer with stables in that neighborhood brought about tho chango by show ing tho farmers thero was a profit In tho chango. A few of them stocked up with big marcs and a hoavy stal- ONE CONVENIENCE FOR FARM HOUSE Soft Water Adds More Comfort to Home Than Almost Any Other Thing. (By MISS J. U SIIEPPEItD.) Fow othor homo conveniences will ravo bo much labor and add bo much comfort as soft water, hot and cold, right at hand. Tho carrying and lift ing of wator, and tho emptying of tubs aro things that aro extremely tax ing and that could bo readily accom plished by mechanical means. To opon a faucet and lift a plug Is all that should bo necessary for filling and emptying tubs and washing ma chlno. Water la needed, not only ln tho laundry but all over tho house, tho laundry bchig mentioned espe cially becauso wash day Is tho hard est day In tho weok, requiring tho greatest amount of heavy lifting, which Is hard on tho back. Wash day also entails much danger of sickness becauso of nocossary exposuro when water must bo carried ln and out In cold weather. Tho entire family should bo Inter ested In this needed Improvement, be cause It would confer a personal ben efit on each ono. Soft water Is bettor than hard for all kinds of cleaning, washing dlsheH, woodwork, floors, and also for bodily ablutions. Who enjoys tho harsh, sticky feeling of hands washed In hard wator, to say nothing of chap ping Incident to its uso ln cold weath er Tho wash basin, tho wnsh boiler, everything used with hard wa ter, glvo silent evldenco of this char acteristic, conHumlng tlmo and re quiring extra labor In scouring when slmplo washing alono would bo neces sary If soft wntor had been used. Cis tern wnter Is not best for tho pur poses of drinking and In preparing and cooking, and It Is not tho Inten tion of this article to recommend it, but simply to Insist that In case but one can bo had In tho houso, let that be soft. Treat Cowo Kindly. Don't kick tho cow or thrash her with tho milking stool when nhe Booms croba. Cows aro very sensitive creatures and such treatment only makes thorn worse. Besides being cruel lt interferes with tho flow of milk. FOR LARGER HORSES lion was Imported. Now thoro would bo no chanco of getting that com munity to chango back to tho non descript typo of farm horso common thoro ten years ago. Any man who tills tho soil, un less ho Is a truck farmer, wants a horso that Is capable of meeting any sudden demand for n hard pull. Ho wants n horso that can swing stead ily along ln front of a binder all day without being exhausted nt sundown. Roads aro nonn too good ln most rural communities, and lt takes a horso with n lot of meat on his framo to go against tho collar on a ton mllo trip to town and return, Tho light animal la flno for sum mer road trlpB, but whon lt cornea to hauling out a load of lumber, a dozen sacks of fertilizer and tho or dinary winter load of farm supplloa through mud that is hock deep, tho hoavy animal with a lot of cn-i duronco Is tho horse that I want to drlvo Thero 1b somo fear on tho part ot, farmers who admlro tho draft type of farm horso that everybody will tako up tho tearing of heavy weights and thero will bo no market for them. I don't lot that bother mo, for this reason: lt will bo a good many cen turies before everybody sees any ono proposition in tho samo light. A lot of men will go tight nhoad brooding their marcs to any old kind of u stallion and rearing tho samo old nondescript colts, Another thing, thnt la to bo considered la that ov cry man la not ablo to grow good draft colts and tako caro of them after ho has grown them. I havo socn draft colts spoiled by foolish handling on tho part of owners, who seemed to think thoy wero feeding; and breaking young bronchos. A draft animal must bo treated accord" Ing to his typo. WATER IS FEARED BY A RED SPIDER1 Destructive Little Insect Hides ort the Underside Leaves of Plants. Tho best thing to uso tho only thing that will bo ot benefit la wator. Just plain, lndoctored water. What tho red spider dreads moro than anything oIbq 1b moisture. Ho will not stay whero tho air la kept moist, If ho can got away, and, If ho cannot get away, ho 1b unablo to do much hnrm. Horo Is whero tho sprayer comes In play again. Seo thnt your plants aro thoroughly wet, all over, at leaBt threo times a week onco a day Is bet ter. , Bo suro that moisture gets to tho underside of tho leaves, where tho spider likes to hldo nway. Most por BonB aro not awaro of the prcaonco of this tiny but terribly destructive creaturo, becauso lt Is unnotlceablo unlcss ono takes special pains to Book, him out. But, If they find that leaves on their plants aro turning yellow and falling; off, they will have good reason to sus pect that tho rod spider Is at tho bot tom of tho trouble. Tho spider 1b bo small that ho 1b never scon unless a special search If mado for him:" Closo Inspection re veals his tiny webs and in theso woba you will discover him, If you look Bhnrply, resembling a grain of cayenne popper moro than anything else, Keep your oyo on tho popper-grain and you will bco lt move, and then you may know that tho red spider Is reBponBlblo for tho unhealthy appear ance of your plants. It Is an excellent plnn to keep water constantly ovaporattng on stoves or registers. Do anything that will havo o tendency to Impart moisture to tho atmoBphore. Tho spraying of tho plants, however Ib tho main thing to depend on. 1 Dairy Cow la Necessity. ' Making tho farm yield moro with out lncreaso ln acroago can bo dona by using alfalfa and sllago. Those two agencies will do moro to increase) tho capacity of the land than any thing else.
