Tun offers of aid to tho Btrlckcn pco plo of Omaha, which cornea from nil over tho stato as well as from all part of tho country, show that when people arc In distress tho moro fortunate are quick to respond. Under normal con ditlons we may seem sordid and unsym pathetic, but when calamitous events occur our hedrts beat warm for tho un fortunate. WEof western Nebraska were appall ed at the awful loss of cattle in tho bliz zard of March 14th, but our misfortune pales Into insignificance when compared with tho loss of life nnd property in tho Omaha cyclone and becomes moro in significant whon sized up with tho tor rlblo loss of humanity and property by floods in Ohio and Indiana. Tho loss in those sf.ates.probably 3,000 lives and pro perty value of fifty millions, is nothing short of a national calamity. The announcement of the Standard Oil Co. that they will soon put out a now cheaper ond better fluid for use in gasolino engines, known as "Motor Spirit" comes with particular pleasuro to thoso who own pleasuro and buslncfl automobiles. Thcpresontprico of gaso line is so high ns to be n snrlous consid erallonin the use of an auto delivery, or the uso of a pleasuro car, and es pecially sinco thoro soemed to be no prospect' of a decrease It is claimed tho now fluid will be more efficient and about half tho price. Plans for tho immediato rebuilding of tho tgrnndo stricken district aro being worked out by a big company of Omaha buelncos men. A corporation is being formed to handle the matter in a systematic manner nnd assist tho un fortunates who lost their homesi nnd porsonnl effects. This institution will begin at onco tho taBk of at least partially reconstructing mnny of theso homes. A public jtppcal sent out by tho Commercial club, says that G-12 houses wero totally wrecked, l.GGG were damaged and 2,179 porsons made home less. In voting against the bill reducing froight rates in Nebraska, Repsesonta tlvo Stevens of this county oxplnined his rnto ns follows; Mr. Speaker: while I bcliovo soma class freight rates 'niid, not commodities, aro oxqossivoly high; yotl contend after talking with tho atato railway commission Uut thoso rates will bo properly adjusted whon once they aro free from ponding court decisions. , I hold that to enact Houso Ttoll No. Glclnto a law will work a hardship on threo or four minor rail roads in Nebraska whoso net earnings per miln show up at a loss, and not caring to discredit the atato rnllwuy commission and not to handicap them In their work for which thoy wero spo 'clflcally created, I vote No. Despite tho fact that tho atato asked Bi'ven men to spend much of their timo fpr two years in working out tho dotaila of a cprnprohonsfvo workman's compen sation, uilldospito tho fact that tho dbmocratlc platform written and pro mulgated at Grand Island last summer loudly proclaimed in favorof workman's compensation and omployers' liability 'laws as' one of tho plodgos it would ro .dacm, tho houso Wednesday put Its 6tatnp of disapproval on a bill embody ing: tho most comprehensive of the measures which have appeared befoio tho legislature;, and for tho most part bocnu80 thoy did not beilovo in the prin ciple of tho hill. And tho votes that practically killed tho bill wore largely democratic votes. The bill is not yot dead but It might as well be. It has not ,voto8onough to put it past tho commit too of tho whole, Little longer can wo pay for our Europoan toura'In corn-fed beof. Only four million pounds of fresh beef could wo sparo abroad in tho eight months ending with last February, compared with 17r,S0G,C19 pounds in tho corres ponding months of 1907. And tho cattlo exported shrank from 270,219 to 12.65G. Imports showed a corresponding in crease. Another yenr at tills rate and wo shall have no beef at all to send tibroad. We might console ourselves with the thought that tho growth of manufacturing" and the homo market" has .done, it. But unfortunately there fs'a leas happy explanation. Six yeara ago ort January 1 thoro wero 72,634.000 cuttle on Amorlcun farms. Last Jan uary,! thoro wero 50,627,000, a shrink ago of nearly one-fourth. Lincoln Journal. AN INVESTMENT PROPOSITION. Platform of the Socialist We conform to the platform of the Soclialist party, both state nnd national nnd to the principles of international Socialism of the entire globe. Socialism is a world wide movements, seeking the socializa tion of all the means of production,-distribution ond communi cation, In other words all the things we socially use shall be socially owned and democratically managed and all things privately used shall be privately owned. We doom it a self-evident fact, that it is absolutely essential to elect class conscience working men to office in order to get laws beneficial to their close. Therefore we pledge ourselves to serve tho interest of that class, if elected to office. We believe that a continual litigation with corporation inter ests will continue as long as the present political power is upheld by the voters. Our motto is: no more franchises to individuals or corpora-, tions. ' We demand the municipal ownership of all telephone, elec tric light, water works and any other public utility, which now- is or may become in the future, a municipal concern. We advocate the immediate installment of a municipal gas plant and a better lighting system. We demand the abolition of contract system in all the pub lic work and we are in favor of tho city doing such work, employ ing as far as possible its own citizens, at an eight hour day and union wages. It is the establishment of principles of socialism that has developed through the socialized roads; schools, post-, offices, etc., which we propose to extend to all public utilities. We demand a public report of all proceedings in the city's business. We demand a clean city under strictly sanitary condition and all laws lived up to the letter and strict enforcemeat. All those favorable to the above platform and method of handling the city business, should support For Mayor A. E. BELL For Councilman First ward LEVI R.
