Association Holds Annual Meeting.
Tho twenty-sixth annual meeting of
' the Mutual building and loan associa
tion was held at tho court houso Satur
day evening and, as usual, tho atten
dance of shareholders was Bmall. The
total mimbor of shares is 5,575, but only
465 were voted Saturday evening in
the election for three directors. The
retiring members of the directory were
Major Walker, W. E. Starr and Ira L.
Bare, and they wero re-elected with
out a. dissenting vote.
Following tho stockholders' meeting,
the directors met and re-elected the
officers who have- for a number of
years served faithfully and well. These
officers are: TV 0. Pattcnon, president,
Victor VonGoetz, vice-president, Sarnl.
Goozee secretary and F. E. Bullard
treasurer. Wilcox &Halligan wore re
tained as legal counsel.
The assets of the association on Mareh
1st last were $493,964.11, and of thisNJ
amount $485,000 is loaned on real es
tate. Loans amounting to $105,000
wero liiado during the year ended. Mcb.
1st, and during the year $22,618.75 was
paid as interest on running and paid up
Btock. The total receipts for tho year
were $214,503.80.
Will Reduce Force.
Following the usual custom of re
trenchment of expenses in the spring
season, a reduction in the force at the
local shops will bo mado next week.
Tho exact number of men to be laid off
has not yet been determined, but it is
known that six machinists and six ma
chinist' helpers will be sent to Grand
Island. This transfer is made for the
reason that hereafter the running re
pairs on Sesond district engines will be
made at the Grand Island shops instead
of the North Platte shops as heretofore.
This, of course,, means a smaller forco
in the local shops, as only Third dis
trict engines will bo repaired.

last evening from Con Scharman of
Omaha stating that his residence and
furniture were completely demolished
by the recent cyclone but the family
oscaped uninjured. '

Award Contract for Building.
Tho board of education held a moot
ing last evening and awarded the con
tract for the new school building in tho
First ward to Howard nnd J. A. Mc
Michael on a bid of $21,641, for the
building completo, this including the
heating plant. There were eight bid
ders, fivo of whom were outside firms.
Surber's bid was $21,991 and Picard
Bros. $25,569. The outside bids ranged
from $17,937 to $23,900 without heating
plant, and thp bids for the heating
alone ranged from $3,848 to $5,687. The
utside bidders who were present wero
well satisfied with tho board's action
in awarding tho contract to the Messrs.
McMichael.
Tho building will be erected on the
lots recently purchased by the board
and will be 65x80 feet, brick and con
crete, two stories and a basement, con
taining eight largo well ventilated and
well lighted rooms giving ample ac
comodations for the lower grades which
aro now in the central building.
Easter Dance a Success.
Despite the inclemency of the
weather last evening several hundred
people woro present at the Lloyd opera
house to attend the twenty-sixth annual
ball of the Volunteer Fire Department.
Chief Sandall and his various com
mittees on arrangement and entertain
ment spared nothing which would add
to enjoyment of tho attendants and tho
carefully arranged program of popular
dances was carried out to tho satisfac
tion of all. Preceding the opening
waltz the Stamp orchestra rendored
one of it customaryhigh class con
certs each number of which received
generous applause from the large
number of spectators who occupied the
galleiy.
Dancing began promptly at nine
o'clock and continued until midnight
when one hour's intermission was givon
for supper at tho local cafes after
which waltzes followed twosteps until
the "we small" hours.
The ball was a decided social success
in overy particular and the fire boys
are deserving and fully appreciate the
generosity shown in the purchase of
tickets.
Five-cent Dance at the
Lloyd Thursday evening.
At the meeting of theboord of educa
tion last ovening an election of teachors
was held and all of the present teachers
who did not send in their resignation
were reelected. Assignments will be
made at a meeting early in April WilBon
Tout was elected as superintendent ond
tho resignation of Principal Streitz ac
cepted. A social Uance will be held at the
Masonic hall tomorrow evening under-
the management of Corbin Jones and
Millage Bullard.
Miss Ethel McWilliams will entertain
tho Young Ladies' KensingtorClub this
evening at her home on West Gth St.
Mrs. Thomas Ryan and children re
turned last evening from a short visit
in Kearney with relatives.

CLOSING OUT THE CLABAUGH
Hupfer Leases the Vienna.
A deal was consummated this fore
noon whereby Charley Hupfer, a for
mer North Platte business man but for
several years pnst residing in Ogden
and Salt Lake, purchased the furnish
ings of the Vienna cafe and leased tho
building for a term of five years. Fol
lowing correspondence, Mr, Hupfor ar
rived from Salt Lake yesterday after
noon, closed the deal this forenoon,
wil return to Salt Lake tonight, and
as soon as he can cloto out his affairs
there will return to this city and as
sume management. His return to this
city will not be later than April 15th
and perhaps earlier. Mr. Hupfer is a
thorough business man, popular and a
good mixer, and has always given his
personal attention to tho details of his
business; this latter being one of tho
necessary requirements of tho success
ful restaurateur. That he is to return
to North Platte and ro-ngogo in busi
ness is a source of gratification to his
many friends.
Mr. and Mra. Weil took charge of
tho Vienna ten years ago. and by giv
ing the business their undivided atten
tion have mot with almost phcnomeral
success. For tho first two years they
leased the building nnd Ihcn purchased
it. Two years ago a third story wa8
added, a pressed brick front put in and
other improvements made, bo that now
the building represents an investment
of $20,000. Other investments, prin
cipally real estate loans, of Mr. Weil
represent twico this sum. He has not
mapped plans for tho future other than
that he and Mrs. Weil will sail in May
or Juno for Europe to visit relativos.
They expeet however to make North
Platte their future houie. Tho success
of Mr. Weil has been well merited; it
is the Result of good judgment, personal
attention to business, strict integrity
and courteousness und in the exercise
of all these he has been ably supported
by Mrs. Weil, who has all tho charac
teristics of a splendid woman.

So for as is now known no former
North Platte people now residents of
Omaha were killed or injured in the
Sunday tornado. Perhaps the most
narrow escape was that of Mr. and
Mrs. F. J. McDonough, the residence
next adjoining their home having been
blown into tho street completely demol
ished whilo their houso only suffered
tho breakage of windows glass.

A ranchman in from the north side
yes.erday reported that last Saturday
several head of cattle were dug out of
snow drifts twelve to fiftcon feet deep,
and that upon being roleased got up and
walked away. They hod been im
prisoned in the snow for a little over a
week. This sounds like a fairy tale,
but is said to be absolutely true. t

Miss Moore to Wed,
Mss Arlelgh Moore, formerly cm
ployed at stenographer in tliu law office
of Albert Muldoon, but of late living In
Cripplo Creok, Col., will be married this
week to Atleo Magnuson, of Lincoln.
Following the coromony the couple will
visit relatives of the bride at Richmond,
Va., and upon their return will mako
their home in Lincoln.
Field's Minstrels Next Week.
That company of fun makers, fino vo
calists and agreeable ontertainers, the
Field minstrels, will make their annual
appearanco in North Platto on Tuesday
ovening of next week. This company
is a favorite in our city, Iargoly be
cause, in Btreet parlanoo, "they de
liver the goods." A number of new
features are announced for tho 'coming
entertainment.
Award for Electric Elevator.
The contract for installing the electric
elevator in the federal building has
been awardod to a Council Bluffs firm
for fl.nSOn account of tho delay in
calling for bids, the time for having the
olevator installed has beon extended to
August 1st.
The treasury department has author
ized Custodian Davis to have a curb
erected around the west side of tho
federal building lot.
Judgment for Damages.
In tho district court Saturday Judge
Grimes awarded Mrs. Destu McConnell,
of Somerset, a judgment of $215
against the Burlington for damages en
suing in shipment of stock und from a
nro set by nn engine of tho defen
dant company. Tho case was first
heard in tho county court where a ver
dict for $342.80 was obtained. The de
fendant appealed to the district court
with the above resu't.

- Buys the Curt Hinman Ranch.
A deal wbb made last Friday whereby
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Osgood became
the owners of the Curt ilinman Ranch
located about seven miles southwest of
town. Thoro nro about 1250 acres in
the ranch, 200 of which is good farm
land. In making the transfer Mr. Hin
man accepted Mrs. Osgood's interest in
the Hinman block on Front street as
part payment. Mr. Osgood will stock
the ranch with cattlo and hogs, paying
special attention to hog raising.
Weston Gets Two Years.
Jim Weston, who i was arrosted for
stealing a moil pouch from n truck at
tho local depot and cutting it open nnd
rifling tho contents, was sentenced to
two years in tho United StatcB prison at
Ft. Loavenworth by federal judge W.
II. Munger at Omaha Saturday.
Weston hnd been previously indicted
by a grand jury anil pleaded guilty. He
now realizes that stealing and rifling
mail pouches is considered bad form by
the United States government.
Churches are Crowded.
The Easter sorvices Sunday at tho
several churches wore largely attended,
the seating capacity being taxed at the
morning services. In the evening tho
attendance wns not quite so large1 on
account of tho stormy weathor. Fea
tures of the services wero the musical
programs and iho floral decorations.
Easter cantatas were given nt tho
Lutheran church in the morning and at
the Methodist church in tho evening.
Sermons appropriate to the day were
delivered by the ministers.
