Mr. Douglas drove a passongot trnin
engine last' summer near Lexington that
struck an automobile with fatal result
to ono man in tho auto. In another in
stance ono of tho axloB boxes on his
engine was broken when an auto was
driven directly into tho engino. In both
cases, ho contends, not only woro the
lives of those in tho auto endangered
but those on tho engine and on the train
woro also placed in jeopardy, nnd pro
vontlon of such accidents is not within
tho power of the engineer. V
"Tho railroads havu spent millions in
an1 effort to mako travel safer and to
make tho work of tho trainmen less
hazardous," soys Mr. Douglas. "Now
an outside agency over which the r'nil
