Chamber of Commerce Meeting.
At a meeting of the Chamber of Com
merce hold in the library building
Wednesday evening communications
were read from U. S. Senators Brown
and Hitchcock favoring the passage of
tho Lover Agricultural Extension bill
or sonio bill of similar purport. Those
letters were in response to resolutions
adopted by tho Chamber of Commerco
and placed in thehandaof the Senators.
A communication was received from
Charles Ware, referring to the request
made by tho Chamber of Commerce
for hotter train Bervice, in which ho
said that he would bo pleaBed to stop
over t North Platte, meet our citizens
and talk the matter over. Tho secre
tary was instructed to extend to Mr.
Ware an invitation and upon learning
tho date when he could bo here, to ar
rango a meeting. A report was re
ceived from the Spocial Irrigation Com
mittee and in accordance theiowltn tho
secretary was instructed to place in tho
hands of tho property owners undorthe
propoHed canal the report in the form
of a circular letter, and to call a meet
ing to convene in the court houso on
tho 28th diy of December nt 12 p. m.
for tho purpose of further considering
tb reconstruction of tho old south side
canal. A request for financial assis
tance from the Chamber of Commerco
for 1 10 purposo of buying sweaters for
tne 14 men of the high school who won
their "N's" during the last foot-ball
season, was received and upon thorough
consideration it was decided that the
board could not use tho funds
for that purpose, but appreciating the
splendid work that had been dona by
tne boys nnd desiring to make that ap
preciation substantial, three men pres
ent pledged $5.01) each toward tho
buying of tho Bweaters and Mr. F. II .
Garlow was appointed a committee of
one to seo that tho balance of tho
monoy required was pledged.
City Council Notes.
At a mooting of the city council
Tuesday ovening, Councilman Hirming
hnuacn, who will take his heat as county
commissioner after January l3t, pre
sented his resignation, which was ac
cepted Mayor Patterson will nanio a
successor before the next meeting of
council.
Tho Btreet commissioner was instruc
ted to open up A and First street
through property owned by B. A. Wil
son and which the latter had enclosed.
Over this matter there has been con
siderable discussion.
Thu city attorney was instructed to
appeal tho caHeof Mrs. Waggoner, who
obtained a vordict of $208 for injuries
sustained by a fall on the sidewalk.
Two ordinances wore passed, one ex
tending tho city limits so as to includo
the Cody oddition, the other rolating to
taking caro it wotor coming from the
roofs of business houses.
Electric street lighting Was tho sub
ject of emphatic discussion. Council
man Hoagland favored the abandon
ment of the lights in the residence sec
tions becauso tho city did not receive
tho sorvice for which it paid. Manager
Walker was summoned before the coun
cil, and a rather lengthy talkfeut re
sulted. Manager Walker admitted that
lie was Bhort of boiler capacity, and at
times when tho load was heavy in tho
businoss district he wns compelled "to
cut oir tho lights In part of tho residence
section.
It is announced that Helen Gould,
now past forty and worth thirty mil
lions, will marry a plain American. As
North Platto Is indebted . Helen for
contributions to the local Y. M. C. A..

life.
Alfalfa millers from Kansas, Nebras
ka, OlflahoRm and Colorado closed their
soinl-annnai meeting at Wichita, Knn.,
Wednesday with n piod'ction that
$20,000,080 worth of alfalfa products
woujd be the output from tho mills this
yoar. Up to date they have milled
COtOftO tons and will produce 40,000 tons
more, before the season closes.
President Taft has mado up his mind
to accept thu profi'er of the Kent pro
fessorship of law at Yale and probably
will take up his duties at Now Haven
early in the spring. He will not be re
stricted, but will be permitted to lec
ture if hodusiros in other law schools
or upon tho platform or to engage in
in any other ocoupation which lie sees
fit.
The houso committee investigating
tho "monoy trust" was Wednesday
shown a chin t defining an alleged con
nection through "interlocking direc
torates," by which members and
directors of J . P. Morgan & Company,
together with seventeen other flnaifciii
Institutions held directorates In various
corporations, from banks to railroads,
the aggregate of whose capitalization
wbb almost $20,000,000,000. While this
announcement is not altogether news,
for such statements have been madu
boforo, it recalls the tact that Wall
street rules the business and llnnnces
of this country, But what are we go
ing to do about it?
In his report to tho governor, state
treasurer (jcorgo ndvocates selling the
public school lands of tho state amount

acres He declares that tho step could
be safely undertaken and that not only
would the state obtuin the proceeds for
investment in safe securities but that
also tho land thus turned over to private
individuals would then be assessable
under the laws of tho state Tho re
turn in this, ho says, combined with
the four and a half por cunt on securi
ties would not tho state a far better
return than Is possible under tho pres
ent rental conditions.

tion to the city of North Platte quieted
and confirmed in him on the grounds
and for the reason that said plaintiff
has been in tho open, notorious, exclu
sive and adverse possession of said lots
claiming to bo the owner therof for
more than ten years prior to tho 6th
day of November, 1912, and that by
reason of said adverse possession said
plaintiff is now tho owner in fee simple

for an order for service by publication

petition is to foreclose a certain mort
gage executed by the defendant, E. C.
Brown, to L. B. Hastings, upon tho
northwest quarter (NWJ) of section
thirty-four (34), township thirteen (13),
north of range thirty (30), west oi tho
Gth P. M,, in Lincoln county, Nebraska,
to secure the payment rf a certain
promissory note dated November 25.
1911, for the sum of $4,000.00 duo and
payable five years after date with in
terest at 6 per cerit per annum.
That the condition of said mortgago
has become become broken and tho plain
tiff has elected to declare the entire
sum due and there is now due upon said
note and mortgage the sum o'f J4000.00
with interest at G per cent per annum
from November 25, 1911, and that said
note and mortgage has been assigned
to and is now owned by the plaintiff tho
Racino Sattley Co , of Nobrafaka, and
tho plaintiff prays for a decree thnt tho
defendants be required to pay tho
amount due upon said note nnd mort
gage or that said premises be sold to
satisfy tho amount duo and that the de
fendants and each of them be barred of
all right, title, interest and equity of
redemption in said mortgaged prem
ises. The plaintiff further elnims a lien
upon tho rents and profits of said prem
ises and prays for the appointment of
a receiver during the pendency of said
actioin for the reason that said mort
gage security is insufficient to pay the
mortgago debt and said E. C. Brown
has abandoned said premises and is per
mitting waste to be committed thereon
and the plaintiff prays for an order of
injunction restraining the defendants
from selling and conveying said rents
and profit during the pendency of this
action and that an interluctory order
be issued appointing a receiver heroin
and directing the receivertotakeehargo
of the rents and profits and that the de
fendants deliver the possession of said
premises nnd the rents and profits
thereof to the receiver appointed by
tho court.
The plaintiff proposes James T. Keefe
as such Receiver and proposes the
United Fidelity & Guaranty Company
as surety on the bond both for tho Re
ceiver and for the plaintiff. The court
has appointed the Sheriff Temporary Re
ceiver pending plaintiffs application for
Receiver.
