And why not? Ho ac complished what ho desired, the defeat of his old friend; tho mnn he recom mended na a presidential cundidnto in M08. t It ii said Governor Aldnch is fooling vory "sore" over his defeat; but pro nbly not anymore so than some of his former friends felt when he, with six other governors, concluded thnt Roose velt was tho only "pebble on the beach." In the next Nebraska legislature tho democrats will have fifteen members in the senate and fifty-one In the house, while tho republicans will havo eighteen fn tho senate and forty-olght in tho houau. In ono legislative district tho vote is a tic. Uncle Jim Hill, the railroad magnate, is quoted as saying that the success of the democrats will not hurt business bocam.e "tho political revolution started bv Theodore Itoosovolt has been civen a quietus, a vast majority still deeming ibwi.se to stand by sound principles. ' Our friend Ben Schleicher, at Brady, felt u littlo aggrieved last spring when wo predicted his defeat. Now that the bnttlo is over, he is probably con vinced that wo mado at least a good guess. Anyhow, Ben can make more money soiling land than assisting to enact laws. Governor Stubba. of Kansas, anothor of thoso famous soven governors who appealed to Roosovelt to bocomo a can didate, has fallen by tho way side, hay ing been defoated for United States senator. Acting in unison tho voters of the two states made ono political grave big enough for both Aldrich and Stubbn. A telegram from Norfolk, Neb., dated two days following election says "throo" democrats aro already scramb ling for tho postmastership; ono got Congiesaman Stephens out of bed at Fremont at four o'clock in tho morning to urge his claims." After a fnmine of twenty years, yru can't biamo tho boys for hankering after a piece of pie. A North Platto merchant who was a rampant bullmoosors, announced on tho evening of election when It was known that Wilson was winnur, that ho would countermand orders ho had placed for spring dolivcry of goods. It was not till then that ho realized that to bull moosolsm Wifson owed his election, and that he had beorf n party to tho election of a man in whom ho Beamed to hnvo no confidonco. It takes some people a long timo to wako up. Tho Lincoln correspondent of tho Omaha Beo quotes Governor Aldrich as having declared that "I'll lick some ono two yonra from now. " In view of tho fact that as ono of thesovon governors, he administered a rnthcr Bovero chas tisoment to tho republican party by do nating Its president for a second term, ono is inclined to wonder whntmoro tho esteemed governor wants, oven though ho was compelled to tnko somo of tho samo medicine. Thqro should have been n million mora votes this your than four years ago to keop paco with tho country's Increase in population. It is doubtful whothoV tho 1912 total will equal that of 1903. In Governor Wilson's own state his voto is smaller than Bryan's in 1908. Tho stay at homo vote was evidently enormous this year. Hero in Nebraska, and probably elsowhore, large numbers of ballots were cast in which no choico was ox- prosseu as 10 president. Tills moans that n million or two of pooplo aro sitting on tho fonco watching tho po litical processlo-a go by, content to wait another two or four years boforo taking n part in determining its direc tion. Oct 29th., 1912. To City Councils and Citizens : 1 desire to call your attention to tne necessity of removing everything of a combustible nature from basements, outbuildings and lots so that a disastrous firo will not bo caused bv spontaneous combustion or from sparks from chim neys coming in contp.et with combust ible material that is being permitted to accumulate in alleys and on lots in the tho several towns in tho state. It is surprising how many business mon seem to lose sight of tho fact thnt this worthless accumulation of trash may bo the cause of great damage to them and possibly their neighbors, when a little care and small amount of labor will en tirely remove a possibility of a loss from this source. In several cases in going into various towns of tho atato wo find excelsior, paper, hay, straw, rags and other accu mulations mixed in with grass, weod3 and sunflowers; tho weeds nnd sun flowors havo boon killed by the frost and nre as inllammiiblc as tho material that has accumulated in and around them, and it makes tho conditions very dangerous. City councils and citizens should seo to it at once that all danger our and imilammable rubbish is cleanod up, romoved and destroyed bofore they have brought about tho destruction of a largo amount of valunblo pioperty and possibly human life. Do not forget that 'procrastination may cause a conflagra tion, " and that It is better to spend a few moments in removing tho cause than to spend a life time of regrets for neglocttng it.
