FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1912.
v During the lost session of congress Geo. W. Norris delivered a speech
againot President Tnft under the heading of "Thou Shalt Not Steal."
This speech is now being sent broadcast over the state under Mr. Norris'
franking privilege. This speech was printed at government expense,
transported through the mails at government expense, for the sole pur
pose of boosting Mr. Norris. Now right down in your heart don't you
think Mr. Norris is taking undue advantage of tho government In order to
further his political ambitions. Is it not a mild way of stealing?
Every good American citizen deplores the assassin's attack on
Colonel Roosevelt and rejoice that the injury received will not prove
serious. Three chief executives of this nation have been the victims
of the assassin's bullets, the attack on Colonel Roosevelt is as much to
.be deplored as were the other three, for it was-no fault of the assassin
that the bullet did no,t accomplish the mission he desired. While the
' Colonel has upplicd the word "thief" to every man who supports Presi
dent Toft and has made unwarranted assaults upon men who are just as
good n3 he, yet we all deeply regret the Milwaukee incident.
It is now announced with some degree of unctuousness on the part
of tho bull moose press that the republicans of Nebraska will be afforded
the gracious privilege of voting for their presidential candidate. That is
to say; the republican electors will go on the ticket "by petition," while
tne progressive party electoia will continue to hold their stolen name, "re
publican." This outrage is the climax of immoral political conduct. No
such shameless rape of decency was ever perpetrated' in the history of
Nebraska. It cannot be possible that the quickened consciences of the
voters of this state will approve it when these voters go to the polls in
November. The hope of the six bull moose electors to profit by the theft
ought to be so completely shattered as to forbid any such unrighteous
thing in all the years to come. Fremont Tribune.
Prior to the primary election The Tribune presented the name of Harry
P. Stevens to the republican electors of the county as a most suitable
candidate for representative to the legislature, and he was nominated for
that position, not because The Tribune commended him, but because his
fitness for the position was recognized by every man acquainted with him.
The commendation given Mr. Stevens at that time by this paper holds
good today he is one of the most progressive farmers of the county
thoroughly responsible and one who is closely identified with the agri
cultural and stock interests of this section of the state. As a member of
the legislature he will use his best endeavors to secure for this section of
1 the state the legislation that it needs, the furtherance of measures that
vitally effects us nnd upon which Senator Hoagland and Representative
Bushee mude such a good start during the last session. Mr. Stevens is a
worker .and when he goes to Lincoln he will not fritter away the time.
"I am strongly for President Tnft," said Elbert Hubbard in an inter--view
at Kansas City, "Mr. Taft will be re-elected to the presidency on
. November 5. The people of this country cannot afford to, and will not,
jeopardize their pay envelopes. It wus never bigger than during the past
administration nnd Mr. Tatt will continue to make it bigger. 'Tra Elber
tus" is a Prm believer in the silent vote. That the eilent vote will go for
Tnft he has no doubts. "The corn yield this year is the largest on record
all crops are good," he continued. "The president's opponent say what
has Mr. Taft got to do with the large crops. Only, a happy people will
plant crops and work, nnd the people of this country have at no time
been huppier than during the jirteat successful administration. The
people are losing faith in Roosevelt. They realize tlmt his campaign is
for personal ambition. Mr. Taft ,VjH be re-elected and this country will
be the better fur it. I have full confidence in President Tuft."
Having made the open avowal of neither supporting the republican
cnuumuiu mr pfcaiuuui uui ui'i'u-MB me repuoucan piauorm ot prm-J
cmlcs, Geo. W. Norris, republicnn candidate for United States benntor,
cannot reasonable ask for or hope to receive support from men who are
republicans because they firmly believe in the principles of the repub
lican parly. As Mr. Norris says he is not a republican, he is no more
dqserviug of republican support than is Mr. Shallenberger, the democratic-candidate,
The Tribune is a republican paper, it has never
failed to support a republican-candidate, and to be consistent it cannot
now support a candidate who" openly avows that he is not a republican.
We do not deny the right of Mr, Norris to quit the republican party
though ho owes ull his political advancement to it but we do deny him
tlmnght to insist that ho is entitled to the support of the republicans.
We firmly believe that Mr. Norris' desertion of the republican party will
cost him his defeat.

Jn speaking of Congressman Kinknid's conseut to le-enter the race, the
Kearney Hub says: Judge Kinkaid is serving his fifth term in congress
which is u greater period than has been served by any congressman from'
this state. He has been re-elected year after year without difficulty and
is today as strong as he ever was, notwithstanding a shift of political
lines. The secret of success In congress is described by a current periodi
cal writep autoblographing a prominent senator, as simply the habit of
industry ana tno capacity lor wukk. Judge ttmkaid has been the great
est worker that has been sent from this state, especially among congress
men, for ho has the reputation of haunting tho departments on the busi
ness of his constituents and of persistently hanging on when he has
something important to get through the house. Hence he has been ro
rnaikubly successful, although he has no desire for the limelight, makes
but a poor showing as a public speaker, and is not given to indulgence
in debate. Hence tho secret of his strength in the Big Sixth is no longer
u secret or a mystery, but a simplo matter of fact which is known to all
of his constituents. Democratic nnd bull moose stock both rose several
points last week when it was anuounced that Judge Kinkaid was "down
and out,'' of his own freewill, but that was a faint and fleeting hope that
is not to be realized, for Kinkaid will succeed himself and people of all
parties in the district will say "well done!"
