Range for tbo chicks is best. Sheep must havo some shelter. Separate tho pullets and cocker elB.' Good feed, good care, good breed, good stock. Some cows aro better bred than tholr owners. Do not put tho. colts In a pasture fenced by barbed wire. Do you havo a lot of young roost , ers? Sell thom for frys. "" It's a mighty easy matter to over crowd tho chick coops now. It may bo wlso to protect tho colts from tho flics during tho day. You cannot fatten your cattle while ticks are sucking their blood. I1U1 culture produces earllor straw berries than matted row culture. Unless a mnn has a great love tor a horse he should not handle colta. A sheep or calf staked In tho front yard Is a splendid lawn mower. Warm skim milk for feeding pur poses soon pays the cost of a farm separator. Host of tho fly dope1? aro fairly good but for results they havo to be ap plied every day. Sheep have just as Important a place upon the average farm as any other live stock. Drink Is all right for tho hogs, but they need somo grain and vegetables to go with their milk. There Is plenty of farm talk In tho air, but it Is farm work that counts in the bank balance. A good plan is to make the lots long and narrow and sow them to pas ture, plowing up alternately. Remember, chick coops aro very apt to become foul and unhealthy while tho weather Is so sultry. It will only take about half as much grain and other feed to raise a litter of pigs if they bo given pasture There Is nothing about green fodder that would havo a depressing lnflu enco upon the milk flow of the cow. There aro about a dozen dlfforcut breeds of dairy cattle and the best of them all Is tho kind that suits you best. Tho best flavored butter Is obtained by rlpenlng or souring cream until from 5 to G Ipor. cent, of acid has been developed. Roughness cannot be made to en tirely tako the place of grain, but a heavy crop of roughness Is not to be despised. Ground llmestouo 13 preferablo to burnt lime unless two tons of tho for mer cost considerably more than ono ton of ,the latter. There are very few farms on which additional labor expended In prepar ing tho seed bed would not yield handsome returns. , A wide range and frequent ex change of pasturo will reduce tho ravages of tho stomach worm, that fearful enemy of the sheep. An enterprising farmer living near a town of 5,000 or moro can Bell every pound of his butter at full retail prices lliil . a1. - Attn tfnna KAiinit Or 1IIUU UUUVU IU JfC.l IUUI1U Tho rnnn who Is trying to ralso hogs without pasture and forago crops Is ltko a puppy chasing his tail. He gets plenty of cxerclso, but nothing else. Sore shoulders on a horso are noth ing less than shameful, nnd no man should consldor himself worthy who permits them to appear upon his work animals. If liorsos are Inclined to nab at each other botween the stalls, put up ome tight wire as a partition. They can see through this all right and still not reach each other. Tho first Incubators used In the (Jnted States wore tested In 1875. Now thousands aro In uso In every state In tho Union and wonderful progress has been made. In fact, without the use of Incubators nnd brooders, the big commercial plants of today would bo impossible). 0 Clover silage Is excellent. Never whip a shying horse. Keep nil young stock growing Making baby beef Is a high feeding art. Clean coops mean henltliy, profit able chicks. Young turkeys and dampness do not get nlong together. Any soil that turns bluo litmus paper pink needs lime. If you haven't a hog house, preparo to build one next fall. Experts say thai popping corn ma terially reduces tho' yield. Plenty of good looso dirt should bo allowed tho molting hens. Tho manners of the horao usually rovcal the temper of Ms owner. Turkeys need a Ido range They do not do well conli.ied to yaidn. Every day you keep tho lambs after thoy aro big enough to go is a loss. Caponlzlng Is another job the farm er neglects and thereby loses money. Water tho hor30 before you give him hay. Hay before grain, concentrates last. Good feed will put life Into a horse a hundred times better than an 8 foot whip. Pasture and cxerclso dovolops a strong frame In all kinds of young stock. Rye may bo sown In tho fall and used ns n late fall and early spring pasture. Stubble that cannot bo stirred this fall should bo disked to conserve tho moisture. Don't be-in any hurry about wean ing tho heifers you will add to tbo dairy herd. It Is well to icmcmber that ducks need plenty of cool shade during the hot months. Lhr stock furnishes manure and convoits forago crops into market able products. Tho green straw pile Is not Infre quently tho sign of a green hand man aging the separator. Keep upthe supply of oystorshclL The llmo in it is an essential article in the production of eggs. It pays to grade melons, nnd It pays to market them in the largo baskota now growing In popularity. No land is so rich that it.s ownei can afford to wasto tbo manuro that is made by his farm stock. In this hunt for tho piofit dollar, keep an eye on the combination of en silage and clover or alfalfa hay.' The foundation for a silo made of concreto and properly, reinforced need not bo moro than twelve Inches thick. A half-blood Holstcln cow bred to a registered Holstcln bull will pro duce a threo quarters Holstcln anl mal. Sheep must play an Important part In the restoration ' of fertility to the wornout grain-raising areas of the country. Rotation of crops is one of the ulra p'p, practical methods of Increasing the productivity of tho farm at.d dis tributing labor. Illinois milk producers found they had to organize to get living prices for their product. This Is needed In all lines of farming. Tho most profitable way of market Ing grain and fodder 1b through stock. Thoy produco manure, which Is vory necessary to tho soil. n As a rule, sons of great producing cows aro moro llablo to begot largo producing daughters than aro great producing cowb themselves, Tho cow that comes in fresh next month Is Just about tho most profit able ono of tho whole year and dairy men are beginning to find it out. A common error of tho experi enced feeder i3 fniluro to provide good shelter. Lambn can not make good gains with wet feet, or soggy fleeces. It Is advisable to place a box of grit or coarse sand where tho turkeys can find it, as not all farms havo sufflclont quantity for tho purpose of good di gestion. The failures In poultry culture are no more common than any other com mercial activities, and aro usually traceablo to a want of proper knowl edge of Its requirements. Ro sure that tho roosting quarters aro well ventilated at this time of the year. Pure air Is free and inex pensive and will enter every nook and corner of the poultry house, if It Is permitted. It Is ono of tho very essential things. Closo, stuffy quar ters are very Injurious. American Native Grape is Grown Amost Entirely in That Section of Country Lying East' of Rooky Mountains Few Cultural Methods Illustrated. (Dy QIJOTUIE T HOB8MANN. Pomolo- Klst, United States Department or Affrkulturc.) There are three distinct vltlcultural .regions In tho United StntCB which segregato tliomsolvos by tho grnpc Bpeclcs grown In them Tho Vinifern region, In which Vlnlf .era varlotlea aro almost exclusively Krown, la located almost entirely west of tho Rocky mountains, bo much of It being In California that thoso not conversant with grapo varieties erro neously call them California grapes. With few exceptions olther tho spur, stool or Bhort pruning system Is used for tho stockier growing vnrlotlos, and tho long or cano pruning Bystom Is usually UBed for tho longer growing 'vnrlotlcs, but either system Is often modified o suit Individual varieties. Thus tho spurs aro sometimes left longer In the spur Bystom, nnd olther Bpurs and canes left longer or spurs cut on the laterals' In tho cane system. Stakes only aro used to glvo tho vinos the necessary Bupport; this method allows tho vlnoyard to bo cul tivated crosswiso as well ns length wise. Vines trained on trellises aro comparatively rare In California. Tho more gonornlly known Vlulfora varieties grown in this district nre the Alexandria, Alicante Bouschot, Am nion, Burgor, Cabernot, Sauvcgnon, Calmetto, Carlgnano, Chassolas do Fontalnobleau, Cornlchon, Emperor, Flame Tokay, Green Hungarian. Grc nnche, Malaga, Mission, Mondeuso, Mourestel, Pizzutclln, Petit Syrah. Purple Damascus, Riesling, Somillon, Sauvlgnon Vert, Sultnnlnn, Sylvanrr, Valdeponas and Zlnfandel. Tho Muscadlno region of tho South Atlantic nnd Gulf states Includes tho cntlro southeastern coastal plain ex tending from tho Potomac to Florida, reaching well up Into tho Uluo Ridge mountains and along the Gulf coast to tho Rio Grando river, spreading to tho north nlong tho Mississippi river Into the great central plains to south east Missouri and tho Tennosseo riv er. In this region Improved varieties of tho Rotundlfolla and Munsonla spe cies aro grown for various purposes, tho better-known varlotlea of these being the Eden. Flowors, James, MIbJi. Scuppornong and Thomas. Tho mul tiple cross-wiro system or overhead arbor Is nlmost exclusively UBed. As previously mentioned, these arbors aro very similar to tho overhead trellis or parralos system used in Spain with tho Almerlan varieties commonly seen In our marketB packed In cork dust and called "Malaga" grapes. Tho third or American natlve-grapo region Is tho ono in which Improved ftVit4r&fc'.7f .k -P )v J- V. This region comprises all that part of tho United States which lies cast of tho Rocky mountains. Of lato years a fow plantings have also been mado In parts of Oregon and Wash ington, but tho industry is most ox tonslvo In tho states west of tho Hud- Bon rlycr and north of tho Ohio river that border on the Great Lakes and In the moro centrally located states of tho Mississippi valley. In this dis trict tho high-renewal, horizontal-arm spur, horizontal block, fan, Hudson horizontal, four-cano Knlflln, umbrella or two-cano Knlflln, Munoon, overhead Caywood and Chittenden systems aro used, tho localities In which they orig inated or are most common being ABSORBS SHOCKS Winn a team is pulling a heavy load over a rough road or pavement It is subject to repeated and sudden shocks, which cause much unnecossnry fatigue. Tho Illustration shows how to mako a doublctroo that will absorb all shocks and suddon jerkB and prevent soro shouldorB. Tho spring may bo ono taken from an old buggy. All tonmstors that care for their horsoB and want them to stand up to heavy work without con etantly having soro shoulders should mako and uso a doublotreo like the ono which Is shown in the accompanying Illustration. Tho County Fair, Tho county fair is of greatest prac tical benefit to tho exhibitor. When the farmer or stockman enlists as an oxhlbttor at tho county fair, the seed of improvement has been sown nnd tho resulta will be found each year there after on tho farm, In Improved llvo stock, improved machinery and a gen eral spirit of advancement in all UncB of agriculture Tho county fair wclk managed is tho cheapest advertising medium, with the most far-reaching results, that tho county can secure stated In the description of the vnrl oils oystoms. Tho varieties most ox tcnslvoly grown aro thu following" Agawam, America, Barry, Beacon, UcrcKmnns, Brighton, Brilliant, Camp bell, Carman. Cntnwbn, Champion Clinton, Concord, Cottage, Cynthlana, Daisy, Dawn, Delaware, Diamond, Dl ana, Duchess, Eaton, Elvlcand, Elvira Emplro State, Forn, Gold Coin, Gaort nor, Goothe, Headlight, Horbomont, Herbert, Ionn, Isabella, Ives, Jaeger, i . 7 A Vino In Its Fourth Year Pruned According to tha Block System. Janesvlllo, Jefferson, Lady, LauBsol, Lenoir, Llndley, Lutle, Martha, Mas- sasolt, Merrlmac, Missouri Riesling, Mooro, Muonch, Nectar, Niagara, Noah, Norton, Olltn, Perkins, Porry, Pockllngton, Prentiss, Rommel, Sa lem, Triumph, Ulster, Vergonncs, Vic tor, Washington, Wilder, Wlnchell, Wetumka, Woodruff, Wordcn nnd Wyoming. Thoro nre so many species ol grapes, each having peculiarities of its own and thoroforo responding most readily to certain cultural methods to which It Is best adapted, that tho prun lug, training and growing of vines which otherwise may appear quite simple, become complicated opera tlons In whlth comparatively few peoplo become oxpert, nnd vlneyard in which serious mistakes nro not made arc raro. In tho fan system tho vino growth, which Is trained to an upright trellis Ib annually renewed to within a short distance from tho ground. Tho vinos aro cut back usually to four canes and as many spurs each year; the canoa aro spread out and tied to tho trel Us, giving tho vino tho shnpo of a fan. Tho illustration, A and O, shows an unpruncd vino In tho third and fourth years. B shows tho samo vino pruned tho fourth year for this system. Tho advantages claimed by the ad vocatcs of this system are (1) that most of the old wood Is dispensed with each year, (2) that tho vines can be easily laid down nnd covered In win ter whon needful In -tho oxtremo - t northern soctlona, and (3) that It after pruning tho canes nre tied and spread fan shaped on tho trellis, ns thoy should bo, tho young upright growing shoots fasten themselves by tholr tendrils and need practically no tying. This system has tho disad vantage of bearing tho fruit too low and Is not now bo generally In uso B8 formerly. A system combining some of the points of Bovcral other systems Is tho horizontal block system. In this tho vines aro manipulated as with tho othor systems and pruned for tho first four yoars, after which tho unpruned vino Is pruned as shown In the Illus tration. As practiced In some locali ties this system appears to bo a com bination of tho hlgh-ronowal and the horizontal-arm spur systems. FROM HARD ROADS Introducing New Blood. Thoy .havo n broad back of moderate longth, which curves slight ly from tho neck to tho tall; their breasts nro broad and deep. Tho body of tho Toulouso gooso Ib mod erate In length, broad, and very deep and compact, tho moro compact tho hotter; and In birds In good condition tho belly almost touches tho ground. Their wings nro large, strong and fold nicely against tho sides, nnd thoy havo comparatively Bhort tails and stout thighs and shanks. In color of plumago they nro a dull gray. The head ia gray nnd tho neck dark blue gray, which shades to a lighter gray as It approaches the back; tho back Is of dark gray, whllo tho breast Is light gray. Pullet Requires More Food Than Old Birds and Feeds Better When by Herself. Young chickens, Uko young people, havo moro or less timidity, und thoro foro it Is not well to run young and old together, nt IcaBt It Is much bet tor to havo them scparato If you can well do bo. Then again tho pullota aro still growing, and thoy need plenty of flesh-forming feed, such as barloy, bono, meat, with less of fattening foods. Tho hen should not bo deprived of theso olther, but oho can get along on less, no what you glvo her will not bo taken away from tho purposo for which you Intended It, as lu the cano with tho pullot, which not only needs theso things for making tho egg, but to go toward tho development of her body. It naturally follows, too, that tho developed, bird will rcqulro less feed than tho pullet, and because tho pul let la somewhat timid oho Ib likely not to get enough, or oven her share. Tho young will feed moro freo among thomsclvcs, and, If you can possibly do bo, keep thom to them BclveB. wmmm Poultry and eggs aro high every winter. All poultry yards should havo shade In them. Movable, scparato nest boxes are tho only kind to havo. Threo months should bring a broil er to tho market stage. Ducks do not Btaud confinement well. Better turn 'em looao. The caro of tho fowls is ono of tho Important things that cannot bo neg lected. Expoauro to hot weather is as dan gerous to tho egg crop as is exposure to cold weather. Keep tho dropplng-boards clean nnd freo from filth. They should bo fre quently scrubbed. Tho poultryman must keep every thing clean and sweet about tho houses and yardB. Linseed meal is good to Mix with, tho mash during moulting 'season. It helps digestion and regulates tho bowels. Tho average farm poultryman cares moro for tho number of cggB a hen lays in a year than tho number of prlzcB Bho wins at tho shows. Rough timber used in the poultry house makes tho best harbor for lice. Perches, nests, etc., should bo mado of smooth lumber In all ensca.
