Announcement
I herewith announce my candi
dacy for county commissioner on the
republican ticket and ask the support
of nil citizenB and pledge to conduct
tho county affairs in an economical
and business way if elected.
iKA L, MlLTONBEItGER.
September starts out with tho evl
dont intention of surpassing in warmth
the irfonths of July and August. Tho
temperature Sunday was ninety-one,
yesterday wns a shade less, but this
week as a whole promises to equal or
surpass any week of last month. Ob
server Hardin would recelvo our thanks
foi a good rain.
Down in Lancaster county, or
rather in tho city of Lincoln tho wives
of the bull moosers havo organized and
the bull moosers will "let tho women
do the work," or at least a part of
it. The "moosetts" we presume
that 1b tho feminine of moose will
attempt an organization in eachof tho
larger towns of tho state.
Tho bull moosers in Nebraska hav
been a little slow in making a forecast
of tho statu, but Jasper McBrien,
whoso enthusiasm generally gets the
best of him, made tho prediction yes
terday that tho bull moosers would
poll 100,000 votes, tho democrat" 75,000
and tho regular republicans 00,000. For
a starter that isn't as bad as we ex
pooted from Jaspor.
Plans for the new Pennsylvania pas
senger station and terminal at Chicago
havo just been made public. Tho new
atru'eturo is to cost thirty-five million
dollars and will ocuupy tho bjock im
mediately west of tho prcsont Canal
street' Btation. Thirty-fivo millions is
aomo money for ndopoteven in Chicago;
it is cvidenco what nn American rail
road can afford to spend for tho accom
modation of its patrons.
The automobile continues to bo tho
moans of sending people to the great
beyond, and tho number daily sent in
creases with tho number of cars. The
daily press each day records from ono
to flvo deaths from this source, and of
course there are many deaths that nro
not recorded. It 13 probable that an
accurate list of tho numbur killed and
wounded, by tho automobile modo tho
prcsont year would excoed thoso killed
and injured on the passenger trains of
the country.
Westward, tho good roads export,
who is mnking a trip from coast to
cdast with a view of making a rocom
mendation for a national highway route,
will reach hero next Saturday on. his
return trip from San Francisco. Ho
went west over the Sunsot route and
is returning ovor tho Platto valley
route. It is understood that tho routo
ho ondorsos will bu duclarcd tho nat
ional highway and it is probablo that
tho next aossion of congross will pass
an appropriation to nssistin improving
tho highway.
Tho fact that Colonel R6osvelt
complotoly disregards his former state
ment that ho would not be a candidate
for a third term; that he declares it
will require many years to carry his
policies into effect nnd that most of his
suppo'rtora in tho Bcnato, a few days
since, fought against any limitation of
tho. terms of a president may or may
hob bo significant. If they nro signifi
cant, and tho people should choose the
Colonel for president, America may see
n political machine of tho liko of which
it has not oven dreamt. Grand Island
Independent
In a speech last wook Govornor Wil
son, democratic presidential candidnto
oaid: "As a matter of fact nobody
ever feared foreign grains and foreign
products of any kind would come
into competition with tho farm
produce of tho Unitod States."
If Govornor Wilson thinks "nobody
ovor feared foreign grains," ho
ought to comu to Nebraska nnd ask
tho farmors why thoy so strongly op
posed reciprocity with Canada when it
was approved by President Tnft. Roc
' Iprocity with that country might help
tho Nobraskn farmor ns much ns it
, hurts him, but ho don't look nt it that
way.
