It is a pity that tho prosperity which wo hnvo enjoyed must bo assailed every time tho democratic party comes within u measurable chance of success, but such is the case and there is nothing to do but to meet It Tho republican argument will be prosented calmly und temperately ns well as truthfully, and thorp will bo surprises for not a few statesman who think they can persuade tho. people into tho notion that they aro prosperous If things tiro only very cheap, though that cheapness comes from tho admission of goods madu by ill-paid foreign labor that throws American labor out of work. ! -It is an 'old truth that it mattpra 'little 'Now cheap things nro if there Js no work availablo by which men may earn their living. There is nothing of the hidebound or stnndpat order about the republican position. It is wholly reason able. The president urged the appoint .merit of a tariff board, and when that board got to working tho democrats who had been most eagor for it pro ceeded to starve it to doath by with holding appropriation. They don't want tho truth and they have an obsession, generation after generation, against American industry. All their professions of regret amount to nothing because the hibitUjrat thoy get powor thoy try to, legislate homo in dustry out of work by giving tho mar ket to tho foreign competltov. Buffalo News. From the Vindicator: Farmers are busy this week cutting wheat. Most of tho groin is being headed as the straw is short, but the kernel is plump nnd of good quality. The y'eld will bo fairly good. Wo do not believe in a farmer being fussy about his neighbors hunting on his place if thoy are careful nnd or derly while doing it, or if a friend from town comes to his place nnd kills a few chickens to eat. On tho other hand when a party of careless sports come along using their firearms recklessly and shooting ovcrything in sight that wears feathers thut farmer is a bigger fool than tho hunters if ho hasn't tho "norvo" to stop such proceedings both from a humano and financial point of viow. Already numerous inquiries aro being made about tho chicken crop and it will not bo out of pluco to stuto here that wo hnvo a law to protect the chicken crop and tho farmers of this community intend to enforce it, "A word to tho wise is sufficient."
