The New Homestead Law.
Register Evans, of the U. S. land
office received the following letter from
Congressman Kinkaid this morning:
Washington, D. C, June 4, 1912.
Mr. Dear Mr. Evans:
I am pleased to inform you the three
year residence homestead bill was this
morning approved by tho President. As
yet, it is not practicable to send you a
copy, but it is the duty of the Secretary
of the Interior to mail each existing
entryman a copy of the act within
thirty days and to advise him of his
privilege to elect, within sixty days
thereafter, whether he will make proof
under the old or the new act. My pro
positions to make the act apply to exist
ing as well as future entries, and to
allow entrymen their choice of making
proof under either the old or new law,
were finally adopted. Even after the
conferees had agreed, I secured a re
consideration, resulting in the adoption
of a clause explicitly stating that the
cultivation equircments do not apply to
Nebraska entries under the one-section
a,ct. The only material change made in
our one-section act is that the residence
period is reduced to three years.
It has been a long siege and I am glad
it is over. Cordially yours,
M. P. KlNKAlD
N. B. I should have stated, entry
men are allowed five months continuous
absence each year besides shorter
absences for reasonable purposes.
Miss Alice Birgo very pleasantly
entertained the Pan Hellanic Girls yes
terday afternoon. The lunch was served

Professor Eugene Knox, of the Un
iversity School of Expression, gave an

ing. Tho program consisted of choice
readings and impersonations. The large
audience which greeted him demon
strated by their presence ond frequent
sppause the pleasure which his enter
tainment gave them. The Junior
Normal students attended in a body.
The intermissions were made enjoyable
by a number of excellent musical selections.
