KITTY
She Is the Cause of

By CLARISSA MACKIG

"Confound. the woman I" ejaculated
Hob KolBOin oh lie Hlamincd the door.
"I'd like to- get hold of that cnt. If I
did It would novor get out ullvo ngain."
Ho stalked moodily to the window nnd
llstoncd, ns-lf fiiKclnntcd by the low
pitched volco of tho woman cnllliiB
Insistently In tho yard bolow.
"Hero, kitty, Icltty, kitty, Ulttyl" she
called.
"Sho's been doing that every "Isht
for a week," grumbled Hob, lcnviiu,'
Uio window wlion the souikIh bud died
uwny in n murmur of endearments.
"If 1 had only known there win a cnt
loving uplnnler in the Lloubo I would
haro Btnycd on the onlRiflc Jtjo cats
for me not on your llfo!"
Hob looked nrnuudtat thervrcll fur
nished room eonialninjr furniture of
lili own. The low ljookuhelvon were
tilled with hlH book. Everything In
the two hirwiipnrtmrnUi wuh bin own.
IIo resolved to Jemiilij thero until Mint
. remote tiui6 whoh he would fall In lovo
nnd marry. "Thnt may bo never,"
lie alwnyM told blmiolf cynically.
At breakfast he approached bis
boarding jnlatresB concemlutr ontB,
"All, Mr. Tortor, didn't I bear, a cat
in Uio hall Just now?" be inquired ns
t he Hipped his coffee. ,
Mrs. Forter nmllod Impersonally.
"Probably you iinve heard a cat, Mr.
Folsotn. Thero are tlireo in tlilH
house."
"Thrco!" Hob wn,s nglinst. "And
nro they nil lost nt nlglit and do their
mistresses iinve to call them homo nt
precisely 0 p. tri,, and"
"Dear me, no! They are very quiet,
Htny at homo cntH that is, all except
MIsb Lime's Snowball. He's an An
gora nnd qulto valuable, I believe. He
bos been n runaway lately and does
not como homo until poor Miss Lane
has becomo bourse with cnlllng him.
She linn a touch of asthma, you know."
"I hope Snowball gets over his wan
derlust boforo long," remarked Bob as
ho pushed hla chair away from tho ta
ble. Mrs. Porter looked pained. "I am
very sorry Jf it annoya you," she said
rather stiffly, "but Miss Lane is my
b'est boarder, and slio happens to own
tills house, nnd Snowball is tho apple
of. lior eye. Perhaps, ho will stay in
now."
"Oh, It doesn't matter," Hob hasten
ed to say, already feeling somewhat
nshnmed nt his complaint against
Suowbull's asthmatic mistress. "I only
happened to hoar her calling every
, night and I wondered you know," his
volco trailed Into embarrassed silence
as ho escaped into tho hnll and took his
lint from tho rack.
Ah be walked toward the front door,
shrugging into his overcoat as hn went,
ho observed n hnndsomo white Angora
cat sitting oti tho newel post. "Snow
ball, I'll bo bound!" he said to himself,
lifting hW bund to pat the beuutlfnl
creature. Hut Snowball's white paw
shot out and his claws dug deep, leav
ing a long ugly scratch on tho back of
Hob's hand.
"Here, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty!" call
Jed a voice from the floor above.
"Come. Snowball!'
Snowball mewed delightedly in re
turn and darted, a ilylug strenk of
white, up the stairs,
V Hob sent one upward glnnco to whore
u fac loaned over tho banister of tho
second story. A stltlly brushed joni
pudour of gray hair above a high fore
head ami a pair of gold spectacles glis
tened down nt him. Ho turned nwny
impatiently. Snowball's mistress was
all that liia Imuglnntluu hud painted
i her.
As ho went down tho street he inon
tally cursed the eat that had adininls
tered tho ugly Hcrutch, nnd ho was till
ed with unreasonable wrath at Miss
Lnno for harboring the vicious beast.
"That'H Uio inalu troublo with board
ing houses," ho said to hlmsolf. "They
are tilled up with' old maids and cats
and parrots. 1 don't bollovo thero is
any hope of my tlndlug i homo nny
whero unless I get married and whore
is the right girl?"
Where was ulio? Up to this tlnio she
hud never existed for Hob Folsoni. Ho
had his ideal, and he was especially
convinced Unit Hho could not have roil
Imir nnd bo loved by him. Neither
could her eyes bo griou. Her hair must
bo ii soft dusky black nnd her oys
that rnrv hazel Ho reached his olllce
nt this Juncture mid was compelled to
drop day dreuma In tho face of dry re

cosy hearth flro he hoard tho volco in
Uio yard calling tho recalcitrant Snow
ball. "Here, kitty, kitty, bitty. Thero

Bob Folsom'8 nervously sonsltlvo hear

For nn hour Uio culllntj continued
at frequont intervals nnd thon sudden
ly ceased, much to Hob'B relief. "Cfni

propured for bod, "I'm getting to bo na

mar 4Jt nrosk hftvo boon niter midnight
when Bob was awakened by a hideous
ygwllng under his window. Thon ho
realised that It must have been fol
lowing him through hla dreams, tor
he had been dreaming of tho Irasclblt
SnowbnU.
"Hull guess ho stayed out tonight
and Is Just getting in! I'll soon put 11
stop to you, son."
Hob looked uround tho room for some
missile to toss down upon the indig
nant Snowball, who obstinately voiced
his complaints beneath Bob FuNorn'e
window. Bob knew that nil the other
bedrooms in tho houso faced upon the
front and sides, and it was doubtful
if any one ulso in tho houso could be
disturbed -by the cat cries.
ITe decided that n paper weight was
too heavy, n sofa .pillow too soft, his
boots quite out of theiuestlon. Snow
ball must be broken of this midnight
serenading under his window. He
whooped eoCUy as n happy thought
struck him. On his wnshstond was
an unopened package of nn especial
talcum powder that housed when shav
ing himself. A quantity of this white
Iowder sifting down from nowhere in
particular upon tho upturned face of
Snowball would effectually put that fe
line nulxunco to rout.
As Hob opened tho hnlf pound pack
age) talcum powder ho chuckled Roft
ly to himself, not hearing footfalls on
the carpeted hall nor tho careful open
ing of tho rear basament door. Ill
own window wan wide open, and he
thrust his head out, turned the pack
ngo u)sido down nnd shook tho powder
out. Then be crumpled the pasteboard
container and towd that down after it.
Snowball's cries coased instantly, but
they were followed by a feminine ex
clnmntion of surprise.
"Great Jove, if I hnvon't sprinkled
Mlxa lane! What In thunder is she
doing down there, anyway?"
Thoroughly chagrined nnd.pcnltont
nt tho outcome of his joke upon tho
white cnt, Bob Folsom pausod, uncer
tain what to do. Miss Lnno was an
elderly woman, and tho sudden do
scent of the powder must not only
have stnrtled her, but might have
cnused her Buffering. Bob remember
ed whnt Mrs. Torter had said about
Miss Lane's nsthuin, nnd ho. resolved
to mnke amends as far as lay in his
powrr. Consequently ho dashed into
n bathrobe and slippers and went out
Into tho dnrkonod hall nnd down tho
black pit of tho stalrwny to the base
ment hall. He wns groping his way
toward the rear door, which ho could
see was still open, when a volco close
beside him naked quietly:
"Who are you, nnd what do you
wnut?'
"I I beg your pardon, Miss Lnno,
Is It not?" ho Ktnmmered.
"Yes, I nm Miss Lane." Bob heard
a button click, and lnstnntly the ball
was Hooded with light.
IIo leaucd weakly against tho wnll
nnd nctually stnred at tho vision thnt
confronted him. If tills was Miss
Lano who was the glassy eyed lady
who had peered at him over tho ban
ister that very morning?
She wns bonutlful. She was young,
not moro than twenty-three, with a
peach tinted complexion, green oyes,
dark eyebrows and red hair! She
was tho antithesis of his Ideal In every
respect, nnd lie should havo turned
nwny from her with superb lndlffer
enco only ho fell bend over heels In
love with her at once yes, red hair
and nil. And the lovely waving red
hnlr was powdered thickly with white
talcum, nnd the pencil tint of her com
plexion Avns flecked with talcum, and
the dark bluo silk of her dressing
gown was flecked with It, and even
the tip of her ndorablo noso. Ah for
Snowball, clasped In tho curve of her
soft nrms, ho was tossing powder wlUi
every imgry shako of his bead.
Of course Bob Folsom had to apolo
gize, nnd he did It hnstlly, stumbling
ovor his words as ho watched for
some gleam of forgiveness In the
groen eyes.
"Of course you didn't know," bIiq
Knld when lie bnd concluded, "nnd of
course poor Snowbnll doesn't llko It n
bit, I'm glad thnt I went down nfter
him Instead of Aunt Cleopatra. She
would really have minded the' pow
der." Sho mulled nwputiy nt Hoi ns
she proceeded on iicr way. "I wonder
If yon would salni closing tho door
and putting out the lights. 1 heard
you coming downstairs, and I was so
frightened that I did not stop tp clo'so
tho door. I felt that I must And out
who It was."
"Your volco did not sound frightened,
nnd well, renlly, I'm afraid I'vo been
awfully old mnldlsh about that cnt. I
supposo you, were anxious about
him"- he was saying -when sho Inter
rupted him with a negative gesture of
her head that sent two long red brulds
flying ovor her shoulders.
"Xo, Indeed; I'm not a lilt anxious or
fond of Snowbnll ho Is so cross 'nnd
scratchy Hut Aunt Cleopatra adores
him, and that Is why I'vo had to go
down and call him in every oveulug nt
bedtime, I suppose you heard me,"
IIo blushed and nodded sheepishly.
"I thought It must bo Mlsd Lane
your aunt, you know."
She cast an enigmatic smile over her
shoulder ns sho wont up tho Btairs,
tho snow white cnt hugged closo to her
bosom. "When Bho hud disappeared
Hob Folsom locked Uio door, Bnappod
out tho light and tiptoed up to, hla
room. Boforo ho returned to bed ho
stood looking out into tho moonlit
ynrd, his fnco soft with tho wonder
nnd delight of 0110 who sees beloved
dreams eomlng truo.
"It Ls my dream girl ull right, oven
f her hair nnd eyes aro not Uio color
I wanted, I wonder how I could have
admired any other combination! Ev
erything seems to go by contraries.
It's Aunt Cleopatra Instead of Jemima.
Iicr nnmo .must bo something very
beautiful d golden. I wonder how
soon I can find outr' ' '
Of coarse Bob Folsom found oat tho
girl's name long boforo ho married her,
and what do yon think It was?

Special on Groceries
tazaacfaaaMiaacaigsaia
A great many people think that it is impossible to buy their
goods of the home merchant and still keep within n reasonable
expense. For this reason the Mail Order Houses are patronized to
a great extent where the merchant nt home should get the
benefit of this portion of the business that is done in Omaha and
Chicago. By selling for cash our price is so that we can compete
with these places and when it comes to making prices on n bill of
groceries that the ordinary family would send away for, we can sell
as.cheap as tho Mail Order House and we have the quality behind
our prices.
This not only gives the consumer the same value for the
money, but saves the trouble of sending away and waiting a week
or two for the goods,
We ask you to consider this bill, compare the prices with the
Mail Order House and also come in and take a look for yourself.
