shortly after sunrise Sunday. Thoro

attended only by .members of tho
family and olglit friends who served

sion moved through the silent streets
of South Richmond, Rev. John J. Fix,
who prayed with Beattio Just before
ho was lod into tho death chamber at
tho pcnltcntlury Friday morning, read
the service of the Presbyterian
church.
To guard against possible anoyance
tho exact hour of tho funeral was kept
secret until midnight and consequent
ly there wcro no crowds around ' the

wore on duty, but Uio hcarso and cov
en carriages bad .reached tho grave
before tho city was astir. When tho
burial was concluded II. C. Beattio,
sr., left with Douglas, .his eon, and
Hazel, his daughter, and two aunts of
tho murderer. The aged father's grief
was intense.

Several of them had testified In his

best mwn when he and Louise Well
ford Owen were married, exactly one
year from the date he pleaded not
guilty of her murder in court, A
florist's wagon, completely filled with,
flowors, entered the cometery gates
ust after daylight, and the mound of
earth was hidden beneath chrysanthe
mums and Immortelles.
After It became known that tho
funeral had already beoti held a tre
mendous crowd visited tho cemetery.
Double ropes wero stretched around
the Beattio section, and two mounted
policemen lu addition to officers afoot
kept tho crowds back. Thero was no
disorder, however, and no attompt to
take away the flowors.
