John Gundrum, who had been at
Council Bluffs for a number of months,
returned to town Wednesday and will
again take up his residenco on his land
north of town.
County Treasurer Langford says the
number paying taxes on real estate
since May 1st is greater than during
a like period last year. This would
seam to refute the statement so often
made lately that money is tighter than
wax.

Nick Mayhow, a former North Platto
barber, is visiting Lem Bailey and
ther friends in town. Mr. Mayhew for
the past fifteen months has been con
ducting a pool hall at Rawlins, Wyo.,
and says ho is doing a nice business.
Corn planting is now in progess in all
parts of the county. The soil is in fine
condition, and tho out look promising.
Here's hoping the season may provo a
good ono for our farmer friends; if so
then wo all prosper.

Mr. and Mas. Chas. Reynolds are
having an enjoyable visit nt Douglas,
Ariz. There ia quite a colony of former
North Platte people in that town, and
in addition to pleasant visits with them,
Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds have had spice
added to their stay there by the fight
ing of the Mexican federal 'and Insur
rectionists at tho town just across tho
Mexican border and In full view from
Douglas.
Mrs. L. L. Gray was called to
Columbus the early part of tho week
by tho illness of her mother.
The Lutheran Mission Band will meet

Two of the Roberson stallions escaped
from their keeper yesterday morning
and cavoratcd on Dewey street for ten

Mrs. Laurel Schrecongost, wife of
Lee Schrecongost who is employed nt
tho iddings lumber yard, died at her
home in the Fourth ward Tuesday night
at the ago of twenty-nine years and six
months. ' Tho funeraljvas held at tho
houaq yesterday afternoon and the re
mains taken to Belvidere, Neb., last
night for interment.
Nortk Platte Wins Tkird.
In the track meet of tho high schools
at Kearney Monday North Platte
landed third place, having only five
men entered, which is certainly n good
record. Tho standing of the North
Platto boys In the several events in
which they entored were ns follows:
Halligan first in 120 yard hurdle; Alden
second in mile run; Ebright third In
100 yard dash; Grccson third in half
mile run; Halligan third in high jump;
Halligan 4rst in running broad jump;
Halligun second in shot put; Halligan
first in hammer throw; Halligan second
in discus throw.
Waraer Buys Exchaage.
Eben D. Warner, who recently sold
his interest in tho North Platto tele
phone exchange, has purchased tho
exchanges at Chadron and Crawford,
In this deal he is associated with E. M.
F. Lefiang and A. E. Grantham, who
were interested with him In tho North
Platte exchange. In tho property ac
quired at Chadron are tho toll lines
running from tho Wyoming lino through
Harrison, tho county seat of Sioux
county, to Gordon on tho cast of Sher
idan county, and from Ardmore, S. D.,
to Alliance, and from Chadron to Orc
lich, S. D., together with a large num
ber of former lines well covering these
four counties. Their purchase covers
one-tenththe area of the state of Nebraska.
File Nominations.
Yesterday forenoon William Yost
filed as a candidate for the republican
nomination for county clork, and A. N.
Durbin filed for tho county treasurer
nomination on the same tickot. Both
these candidates are well known,
Mr. Yost having filled the position of
deputy county clork for several years
and Mr. Durbin having served a simi
lar period as deputy treasurer. They
are therefore well acquainted with the
duties of the offices which they seek,
and both are well qualifien for the posi
tions. Mr. Durbin, before entering
the treasurer's office was a resident of
Medicine precinct, while Mr. Yost has
lived in North Platto since early child
hood'. Both these young men are clean
and popular and will no doubt make a
strong race against all comers in tho
primary election.

hood of "Trainmen, now in session at
Harrlsburg, is attended by over 700
delogates from this country, Canada
and Mexico.
Engineer Wood , White, whe was re
leased from St, Luke's hospital a week
ago following an operation for hernia,
will resume service with the company
tho early part of next week.
Terrence McGovcrn, who had been
visiting in town for a month, left this
week for Sidnoy to accept a position as
boilcrmakcr. Mr. McGvorn for sev
eral years ha boon living in Montnn.
Mrs. McGovern will go to Sidney In a
few days.
, Freight traffic men say the volume
of business being handled by Nebraska
roads Is much lower than it ought to
bo now, but thnt prospects for heavy
business later on wero novor better.
Tho situation is growing a littl better
right now. but tho improvement lasllght
and not sufficient to cuuao great joy.
After thirty-seven years railroad
service, thirty-four years of this timo
on tho Union Pacific railway, D. B.
Ililica, one of the oldest engineers,
has been retired on the pension list.
Mr. Hinea was promoted to run an en
gine on the Rock Island railroad In
1870, and has tho first train order he
ever got, which was issued at Rock
Island, II)., in January 187C.
E. J. Robinson, of Lincoln, state ex
aminer of county treasurers, has been
in town for several days, auditing the
books of County Treasuror Langford.
These examinations are made usually
once jn two years. JVlr. Robinson has
been an examiner for nearly a dozen
years.
Examination for Boiler Inspector.
On June 7th and 8th civil service ex
aminations will be held at ho North
Platte postofilce by Mrs. Lillian Gleeson
for ellglbles to fill positions of district
inspectors of locomotive boilors. Tho
salary is $1,800 per annum and necessary
expenses.
Applicants must be between 25 and 50
years of age, and must have had at
least three years experience as master
mechanic, road foreman of engines.
round house foreman, boiler-inspector
or engineer and five years as fireman.
There are fifty districts, one inspector
in each district.
Conrad Walker spent several daya In
Lincoln this week attending tho Work
men state convention.
Last Tuesday night direct telephone
connections wore completed between
New York and Denver. The next
move will be direct commumication
with San Francisco. This latter gap will
bo completed within the next year.

Senator Hitchcock, who had been
sick at Washinuton, is reported much
Improved. The physician, however,
says he must deny himself of eating
lobsters, of which lie Is especially
fond. Too bad.

C. F. Scharmann aays, "You may be
interested in knowing that there ia
much more snow In tho Medicine Bow
range of mountains now than there was
a year ago at this time and that It In
going off slowly. They tell me hero
that tho Laramio rivor has risen a foot
in three days, which will mean mora
water for tho North Platte river."
