Church unity la a live question among twontloth century christians. The thought of all good hearts seem to be: wo be brethorn; let us get closer to gether. Wo should think well not ill or ench other. But unity of heart must proccdo unity of body. Spiritual unity must precodo corporate unity in tho churches. Tho recent general conven tion of tho Protestant Episcopal church spoko for unity, but insisted that it must bo on tho bnsls of the Historic Episcopate. Cardinal Gibbons of the Roman church, renlvintr to this in a re cent sormon, in Baltimore, said ho re joiced In this desire, but that it could only como about on the basis of tho papacy, or as he phrased it, "when all christians recognize the One Chief Pastor". Now if tho ono will not unito oxcopt on tho basis of tho episcopate, nnd;tlio other except on tho basis of tho papacy, and if nrotestants general! will not recognize either of these as essential to the church, how shall we got together? As we near the end of two thousand years of christian history wo find the'ehurch more divided than ovor before. Will It require two thous and more to got together? Is corporate unity tho thing wo want, or will wo be satisfied with spiritual unity? At all events, as a atop in the right direction, this thought should be pondered; that Christ did not pray that we might be ono in the prcsbytory. or the con ference, or the association, or tho con vention, or tho episcopacy, or tho pap acy, but that we might bo one in Christ.
