Nobraska, PoatoflV aa second class matter. TUESDAY MAY 31, 1910. At Indianapolis Sunday a driver named Hnrroun in a Mormon car covered n distance of 200 miles in two hours, forty-six minutes and thirty-one seconds, breaking all previous record? for that distance. On the same day another car made ten miles in eight minutes and eight seconds. This is certainly desperate driving. A new world 'b record for big gun shooting, which incidentally emphasizes the superiority of United States naval marksmcnshlp, has just been mado by the new battleship South Carolina. With its forward turret twelve-inch guns it mado sixteen "bull's-eye target'' hits out of sixteen shots in four minutes and fifty-ond seconds. Last Sbnday Glenn II. Curtis flew from Albany to Now York city in a nacroplane winning the $10,000 prize offered by the New York World. Ho covered the distance of two hours and thirty camo to earth as calmly 131 miles in minutes, and and lightly as a pigeon. His average speed for tho distance 54.06 miles an hour sur passes any record over mado by lyi aoroplano in long distance flight, and in its entirety his feat perhaps eclipses anything man has attempted in hcavier-than-air machine. an It was naturally to bo expected, tho railroads of tho country, in making an advance of freight rates, claim that it is mado necessary by a gcnoral advanco in tho wages of employes, which In crease was mado necessary by the higher cost of living. An advance in freight rates will, of course, necessarily Increase tho cost of living, and will In end cost the whole people mora than the total incrcaso in wages paid railroad employes. It is also probable that tho Increased rates will more than repay tho companies for their incrcaso in wages. A man may bo very intelligent and yet be foolish. 'A tits may seem some what harsh when applied to ex-Presi dent Elliott, of Harvard university, and yet he seems to havo earned it when ho says "labor unions degrade human character." Tho fact is labor unions havo olevated tho intelligence, tho character and tho prosperity of the workingman; wero it not for tho unions thousands of workingmen would be mere serfs, receiving starvation wages and certainly povorty tends to degrade character, stunt intellect and incrcaso immorality. In tho coming summer tho city of Trenton will have upward of 2,200 boys playing uniformed base ball under municipal control. Thoy will bo divided into leagues, with regular schedules to play out and pennants to win. This is the most ambitious schema of its kind in the United States and perhaps in uie world. tor two seasons now Trenton has had more than 2,000 boys playing base ball under municipal con trol. The games are under tho direction of two directors of baseball appointed by the Trenton Playgrounds commission and paid $1,000 a year each by tho city. Tho directors are Albert Bratton at one timo one of the best known base ball and baskot ball players in Now Jersey, and William Honoy The report of tho congressional com mlttco appointed to investigato tho Balllngor-Pinchot controversy will, all likelihood, bo published about tho middle of July. There may be two re ports, one signed by Senator Nelson of Minnesota, chairman of tho joint mittee, and tho majority members, and tho other by tho insurgents and demo crats on tho committee. It is general ly believed that Secretary Ballinger, of the Department of tho Interior, wl bo entirely exonerated of wrong doing and Gilford Pinchot, Louis R. filavis and others among tho members will bo criticised for what the committee may term "their misguided zeal." Never theless tho opinion prevails that Secre tary Ballingor's resignation will bo in tho hands of President Taf t boforo No vember.
