Yesterday John Grant purchased tho
James Lahoy farm, containing eighty
ncros, for fivo thousand dollars. Tho
land in located about a mile west of tho
city limits, Mr, Grant bought the tract
for speculative purines, and expects
to sell it at a considerablo advance.
RAILROAD NOTES.
Peter .lessen camo down from Sidney
last week, to take tho examination for
firemnn, but on account of defective
eye sight failed to pass.
Conductor J. M. Moonoy, wife nnd
daughter returned Saturday from their
trin to Boston. Concord, and other
points in tho New England Btates, a
visit that proved very pleasant.
Tho new 100 class of engines rccctvod
by tho Union Pacific aro pronounced to
be "great" by the cngincmen. Like
tho majority of new engines received,
they havo been running "hot" but this
will soon bo overcome.
Cattlo shipments aro heavier this
yonr over tho Union Pacific than ever
before in tho history of tho road, the
officials report. It is said that more
stock trains have ben handled this year
already than during nil of last year,
and tho fall stock shipments aru not
yet ovor by any moans.
Conductor Dantler is in somewhat of
n dilemnn. Ho returned to work n few
days ago after several weeks' vacation
and found that he hud eo increased in
weight that ho couldn't get into his
uniform. If ho orders a new suit, he
may again shrink and it would be
valueless; if he docs not vvnsto awny hn
must havo it. Mr. Dentler will bo glad
to havo suggestions as to what ho
should do.
What might havo been a very disas
trous wreck a few miles onst of hero
one night last week was prevented by
tho infallible block system. Leaving
North Platto with No. 4 Engineer Wood
Whito had orders to mret No. 3 at
, Maxwell, which was changed at Keith
to a meet at Hendry instead of Max
well. Engineer Bob Doughif, pulling
No. 3 had orders to meet No. 4 nt Max
well and should havo received nn order
at Brady Island changing tho meet, but
the operator thoro foiled to deliver it.
and as a consequence tho two' heavy
passenger trains met half way botween
Maxwell and Hendry, but as the blocks
stopped them both one-fourth mile
upart no damage was done. Douglas
being nearest to a siding backed up and
traffic, was resumed with not oven a
serious delay. It is needless to sny that
tho operator nt Brady was immediately
discharged.

A. H. Nicman, the assistant secretary
came in on No. 5 Monday morntng and
was given his first degree in tho North
Plutto association.
Through tho generosity of Messrs.
C. O. Woingnnd, W. W. Burr and
Frank Echler, the Y. M. C. A. has
been furnished with now bath brushes.
Tho Sunday nfternoon sing was a de
cided succeeded considering the initia
tory service.

Fire Last Evening.
The frame building cast of the Star
hotel on Front streot, owned by
Christian Sodacctt, and occupied jointly
bv Mrs. Adam Walz and several
Greeks, was badly gutted by fire at
eight o'clock last evening. The Greeks,
who occupied the rear end, became in
volved in n fight and upset either tho
stove or a lamp, setting firo to tho
woodwork, and tho Hamc3 quickly
spread. The Biding on the east side of
tho Star hotel was also badly charred.
The fira companies responded promptly
and soon extinguished the (lames.

Tato Lodge, A. O. U. W., was in
crearcd in membership last oveninjj by
tho reception of sixty-live new mem
bers, forming part of Uic class secured
by Doputy Grand Master Workman
Pickering. Last week thirty-two mem
bers wero initiated, and there yet re
mains twenty-eight to receive tho de-
groo, thus making a total of 125 now
members nnd bringing tho membership
up to 4 10.
As might bo expected, tho hall last
evening was pucked liko sardines. Not
only was thero a largo attendance of
local members, but thero wero ropro
sontatives from a scoro of towns in the

Walling, grand master workman, was
present, as was also grand medical ox
nminer Redfield, nnd tho presence of
thoso grnnd olllcora and visiting mem
bers mado tho evening nil tho more
memorablo.
Following tho ceremonial a collation
was served by Cntorer Armstrong, and
nt ono o'clock tho posts dissembled,
each feeling that the evening had been
