I rospectfully announce myself as a candidato for county commissioner, subject to tho action of tho republican primary. A. 0. KoCKEN . Submit Proposition. At tho special mooting of tho city council I'riuay evening called to con sider tho waterworks question. I'resi dent Hoffmaster of tho American Waterworks Co., was present and talkod to tho mayor and council for short titno. Ho stated that at tho timo tho appraisemontof tho plant was mado tho company had expended $139,000 oil it and un to the nreBant timo $141,000. "At tho timo of appraisement" ho said "l had no idea that tho tigurus would go below $125,000 and in tho $85,000 valuo nlacod by tho appraisers Bonietliinc has been omitted. Ho explained that an es timate was only a guess, as oxporienco has taught him and said that city Engi neer Welsh's estimate was too low. Tho council rejected tho ofTcr of tho water company to send an oncincer hero o go over tho city enginoer'f esti mate and Goodman ofTorcd tho following resolution, which was seconded by Her- mtnghauson: Be it resolved, by tho mayor and council of tho city of North Platto, Nebraska, that, for tho purposo of sett nng tno waterworks question at as early unto as possible, tno said mayor and council hereby agrco to submit to a voto of tho peoplo of said city a propo sition to voto bonds in the sum of sixty l$ou,uuu; tnousanu uonars, lor tho pur pose of purchasing tho present water works plant, together with all appur tonancos, tools and appllancos thorcof, providing tho owners of snid plant will agrco in writing, according to dotails satisfactory to the said mayor' and council, to sell and convoy Bald plant, appurtonancos, tools and nppllances. freo and clear of all incumbrances whatever; to mako delivery of the samo and formal transfer thereof to tho city of North Platto, Nebraska, not lntor than nlnoty days after tho bonds are do voted; to accopt bonds of snid city in the said sum of $G0,000, so voted, In full pavmont for said plant, annur- tonances, tools and appliances and noti fy Bald mayor and council by tho timo of their nsxt regular mooting, that this proposition has neon ncccntou. Tho voto on the resolution was: Yes, Goodman, Herminghausen. Sullivan, Tracy, Yost. No, Tobln. In offering the resolution, Mr. Good man Buid that it was timo to Bottle the wntor question and that in adding 15 per cont to tho Lngineor s ostimato for any mistakes ho may havo made, he finds that SGO.OOO will cover the amount, Tho council adjourned until tho next regular meeting on July Gth. Boost Alfalfa Mill. Mr. Editor As there has been con sldornblu discussion irointr on botween tho farmers in regard to tho oroction of an alfalfa mill and probablo bucccss as a paying venture, and at the samo timo tho growor recolving from two to four dollars more nor ton for his hav the proposition from my point of view looks good. Al fulfil menl is worth twontv-one dollars a ton on truck at shipping point to day nnd dealers are anxious to con tract nil this year's crop at that pricu, Then thoro Is mixed feed manufactured at tho mill, corn nnd alfalfa nnd alfalfa nnd outs, etc, to bo irrouned into meal, mukinir a do mand for grain at tho mill which tho fanners will furnish and got bettor prices thon they aro now gotting. Now this is a business that can not bo over done, because the demand will always exceed tho supply. It Is tho balanced ration nnd is being led extensively to an Kinds of stock, horses in particulnr. Now na to profit, oupposo tho mill pays tho farmors eight dollars a ton for loose hay, which is two dollars n ton more than ho gets when ho bales it as ho has been gotting about eiirht dol lars h ton on track on an averaeo one yonr with another. Of this amount it costs two dollars to bale and loud it. Now say thoro are about three thousand tons nt present that could bo delivered at North Platto loose this year nnd tho growers received two dollars a ton more than thev had been trotting. This would net them $0,000 mori thnn any previous year, naturally tnoy win nave that much moro to expend Tho farmors will doubla their acreage at once. Now as to profits accrultur to tho mill, tho alfalfa costs thorn eight dollars a ton looso. It costs 1 told, fncludlnir man ufucturing, storing and soiling four dollars after tno mm is nunc, xnow oight dollurs and four dollars nro twolve dollars. Tho meai is aom tor twenty ono dollars a ton, which loaves them ; nroflt of nine dollars a ton. A -1-ton-an hour mill running ten hours a day would irrind nt least thirty tons, which would clear $270 n day. Figure this for 150 davs and vou will find this would pay tho company bettor than bnnlc Btock twice over, figuring on a basis of $20,000 to build nnd equip tno piant anu cash to do business with. They can al so ship in hay and run nine months in the year. They can pay fourteon dol lars a ton and thon mnko money. A mill run rlht nnd managed well would ay three dollars a ton prolit. 1 bc ieve in cooncration nnd when a mill is built tho growers ought to take stock in it and get it on the front seats. An Alfalfa Grower. Children's Day Exercises. Tho Children's Day exercises of tho Methodist church wero held at tho church Sunday evening, Tho attendance was very largo, in spito of tho threaten ing storm. Tho nrotrram was very well rendered nd great credit is duo to Mrs. Robin son, Mrs. Crane, Mrs. ilinmnn, Mrs. Cummings and Mrs. Chamberlain fcr tho careful trnininrr clvcn to tho children. Tho vocal solo by Miss Ester Antoniuos was very wall received. Tho contribution, which was for the Board of Education of tho Methodist church, was very largo. Tho money from theso children day exercises is oancu without cntcrcst to young Ccople who desire a higher oducation, ut havo not tho means. The church was loft in total darkness at tho beginning of the nroirram. owing! to'tho fus burning out. but with tho aid of candles tho exercises wero carried on until the fuso could be re placed. Big Sugar Factory. Tho following will bo of interest to tho boot growers of Western Nebraska: That a (Trent boat sui?ar factory cnnt ing $1,000,000 will bo built by the . - . ... 'I . v American Beet Sugar company at Scottabluff was declared today bv Sonutor Burkott to bo assured. For some timo negotiations looking up tho enterprise havo been on foot, tho senator having means of knowing what was doinir. Ho has been informed that it is certain that tho establishment will bo erected. "There w ill bo 25.000 neon o h that rricnted district in another ton vears." said tho senator today, "and it will bo one of the famous garden spots of tho country." The senator is workliir on a now plan to occuro early completion of the third section of tho North Platto irrigation project, unu declared touav that ho ex pected it would succeed, to tho rolief of the settlers in that rccrlon who need wator.
