Pontofflco mm bowuu uiub iiiftivur TUESDAY MAY 4, 1909. Dispatches from Africa statu that in tho first real hunt ex-President Roose velt killed throe lions in ono day and hls-flon Konnit brought down another. Roosovclt is evidantly as fearless and strenuous as a huntor ns ho was n president and uses n gun as effectively as ho did tho "biff stick." Tho city of Lincoln will today voto whethar it shall havo daylight saloons or prohibition, and it Is probable that the latter proposition will win. Tho campaign has been vigorously waged, a number of tho leading lawyers of tho city leading in tho fight against tho continuance of saloons. Tho result in Lincoln will bavo moro or less influence throughout tho state. The Burlington railroad has adopted tho merit system for its employos and abolished tho prnctlco of suspension as a corrective measure Tho new ordnr becamo effective Saturday under nn order issuad by Second Vico President Willard. A record will bo kept of each man and if an employs loses lila place it will bo because of a bad record. An employe guilty of disloyalty, drunken ness or insubordination will bo dis mirsed from servico and will not bo re employed, and ono whoso service re cord indicates that bo is an unsafe or unfit man will bo dismissed. Pro motions will bo mado as in tho post. An omployo, upon a request in writing, will bo givon at any time a copy of his service record. Democrats Hard to Please. When tho tariff bill wu firot reported to the houBo, being thq product of re publican hands, of courso it did not pleaso tho democrats. Not all of them know just why, but it was their habit to kick. They turned to tho president and wanted to know what ho was going to do about it, but Mr. Taft kept still and waited until should como tho ex ecutive's time to speak, oven though ho was berated by the democrats for not bringing pressure on the houso leaders for a bill which mot their ideas of what tho republicans hud promised. Tho tariff bill in duo courso of timo went to tho senate, was amended and reported back to that body, and still the president has kept his own counsel, at -least so far as taking tho democrats into his confidence. Through it all Mr. Taft Iiqb simply referred inquirers to his Bpe.echim and lottern during the campaign and Binco, but all tho baiting of his oppononts has not been able to drive him to mix promaturoly In with the legislative work of framing tho tariff bill. Tno plan to good tho presldont into making an issue with congress having failed, his democratic opponents havo taken another tack. Tho efforts of men whose viows aro similar to thoso ox pressed by Mr. Taft to shapo tho tar iff along thoso lines is being denounced as indirect cocrsion of congress on tho purt of the pro'sidont. Mr. Taft still da dines to gratify his political enemies by calling them off and consequently thoro is moro woo and unhappiness in tho domocratlc camp. While tho heathens rago Mr, Taft continues to smlia and when the smoko has all cloarcd awny tho chuncos aro ho will in tho main hnvo had hla way, which was plainly blazed out during tho campaign, It is really too bad tho prosldont cannot satisfy tho democratic malcon tents, do what thoy may, but if ho pur sues tho straight path, tho peoplo will seo through tho democratic domagogy, Omaha Beo.
