FRIDAY APRIL 9, 1909.
Patterson Elected Mayor.
As a result of the election hold Tues
day, T. C. Patterson will bo North
Platto'i next chief executive, having re
ceived a majority of ninety-seven over
J. It. White in a totnl voto of 680. Mr.
Patterson received a majority in each
ef the threo wards, which was contrary
to the forecast mado by people gener
ally, as it was predicted that in the
First and Third wards, whero thu
waterworks question figured most
strongly, he would lose out. Mr. White
was nominated by petition largely
throueh tho efforts of the lenders of
the Municipal Ownership League, and
they worked in hia interests; charging
Mr. Patterson as losing against munici
pal ownership. Prior to election Mr.
Patterson mado no statement of his po
sition on tho waterworks question, but
it was understood by thosn who sup
ported him that ho would if eloctod be
governed in his actions and influence by
what ho considered was for tho bust
interests of the city, and n majority of
the voters reposed confidence in him
It may be added Hero that it was
through tho influenco of Mr. Patterson
that, a number of years ago, a bill wns
passed by tho legislature which in
creased the amount of bonds which a
city of North Platte's class could vote
for the purpose of purchasing or build
ing waterworks. It would therefore
appear that he wns one of the first of
our citizens to take up municipal own
orship.
The Tribune regards Mr. Patterson
as one of tho most progrcBsivo citizens
North Platte has over had; thnt no one
takes a greater interest or moro pride
in our city than he docs, and it is con
fldent that when inducted into ofllco his
solo view will be to do thnt which will
bo to tho greatest good to the groatost
numbo.
Daylight Saloons.
Governor Shnllenborger Tuesday
aftornoon signod tho eight o'clock clos
ingbill and on and nf tor July 1st it will
bo unlawful for any person to keep
saloon open between tha hours of
o'clock in tho evening and 7 o'clock in
Iho morning or to sell liquor between
thtsa hours. Becauso the bill did not
carry the emergency clause it doos not
become effective until three months
after tho adjournment of the legislature
which will be July 1. Immediately
altar signing tho bill tho governor
dictated a statement, in which ho said
"The plan proposed in this amendment
for tho entira stato has been tried in
tho capital city of Lincoln, and both
"wets" and "dryB" uliko commend Its
effect. Business thrives in this city nnd
the hotels and places of amusomont
claimed most to be effected nro being
continually improved and constantly
crowded with patrons. It is admitted
upon all sides that in this city it has
had the effect of eliminating much of
public rancor from tho liquor question
"This amendment lms much dppasi
tlon in the two Omahas, because bust
neso men aro fearful thnt it will affect
trade and commerce adversely, and for
tho further reason that it limits to
certain oxtont tho policy of "homo
rulo" upon this matter. I boliovo, how
ever, that oxperionco will justify the
law, nnd thnt our largo cities will find
thnt thoir prosperity docs not depend in
any way upon two or throo extra hours
for the snlo of liquor.
"If tho law it) as wholesome in its of
feet as I boliovo it will be, it will give
solid standing ground for those who
beliove in strict regulation as tho best
way to handle this quostion."
Among tho "issues" killed at thl
session of tho legislature may bo listed
the "initiative and roforondum" so ar
dently supported by Mr. Bryan; wom
an suffrage in evory form in which
camo boforo tha session; nil ndvnnce
tcmperanco legislation of whatever
character excepting the "daylight" sa
loon bill; assessment of mortgages
to
the ownor of the mortgage, appants d
rcct to tho supremo court from tho
railway commission making losstediou
and expensive the prosecution of suit
against tho corporations by private in
dividuals. In tho langungo of a lend
ing democratic member nf tho house
"the peoplo have profited little by th
legislaturo with its democratic major
ity." The bill regulating tho charges
at stockyards was smothorod in th
sonata after passlng-tho houuu and
nevor camo to final voto.
. In signing tho daylight saloon bil
Qovornor Shallenberger has drawn th
flro of tho liquor interests. Cliuo. Motz
president of tho Motz browing coin
pany of Omaha, had a talk with the
governor prior to the primary last sum
mer, in wnicn n quotes tho govornar
as saying: "Now, Mr. Metz, I will
not ran for governor unions you can as
sure me that I have tho support of the
brewing and other liquor interests. I
am. not In favor of county option, nor
prohibition in any form, and I am op
posed to making tny revisions in tha
Slocumb law that will impose greater
restrictions on your business and that
of othor brewers and liquor men."
