I'ostotllce ivi itjconu class mailer FRIDAY, MARCH fi, 1909. TUB democratic majority In the lower hnisooftho Nebraska legislature has recommended for passage the bank guaranty bill. U Is admitted that the measure doo not nrovido for the nctual guaranty of deposits, nor does It provide for the immediate payment of Iorscs in case of bank failures, in other words tho measure amounts to but little. The democrats hope.however, to make tho votors bellovn that by passing the measure they have fulfilled their platform pledge. Tho statistics for Decomber 1908, lust issuod lv the fudornl officials fur nish certain aBiuring ovidoncos of im provement in trade over tho corres ponding period of 1907, nt tin height of the Industrial depression. Tho greatest improvement shown is in tha importa tion of crude materials for u wi in the manufactures which nggrogato $11,- 170,000 for December, 1908, as com pared with $29,130,000 for December of tho nreeedinir vonr. Tho imports of that character for last December wore only $3,000,000 less than for December, 1000, one of the best months in history. By a voto of forty-six to forty-one, tho bill introduced in the legislature providing that saloons shall opon at 7 a. m. and closo at 7 p. tn.. was indefin itely postponed or in othor words killed. Tho bill was formerly rccommonded to pass by tho committeo of tho wholo by a voto of forty to thirty-nine, but tho saloon interests becamo active and this activity resulted in victory for tho whiskoy men mon when the bill came up for passage. In Lincoln they have tho "daylight saloons, and thoy aro found to be a great improvement over tho midnight saloons. COMMISSIONERS PROCEEDINGS. March 1, 1909.
