THE growth of the Christian churches
of the United States in the year 1908
wan not so rapid an in any ono of the
procoding five yoars, according to sta-
tinticH of all tho religious bodies just
compiled by Dr. H . K. Carroll of New
York. Ih tho report are included only
church mombers in tho United States.
In all Christian churches in this coun
tryProtestant and CHtholic there aro
now 34,282,543 members. Of this total
12,091,050 are credited to tho Roman
Catholic church. In all tho churches
720,017 comtnunicunts wore added in
1908, far less than wan tho gain in 1907,
which wbb reported as 3,2 11,280, but
mora than half of that total was credi
ted to tho Roman Catholic church,
whercau for 1908 tho Roman Catholic
incrcaso id only 298,813. Thin leaves the
total Protestant gains for the two
years, respectively, 571,143 in 1907 and
nnd 421,801 in 1908.
Although Mr. Taft had said ho should
not announco his cabinet in advance of
its nomination the list became definite
ly known. With tho final selection of
Franklin MacVoagh of Illinois as sec
