Fill DAY, FEBRUARY G, 1909. The Treasurer's Statement. Elsewhere is published tho semi annual statement of County Treasurer Langford showing tho receipts and dis bursement of monies for tho six months ending December 31st, 1908. A great part of this statoment is "Greek" to the averago reader, but thore arc some items that wo wish to emphasise. One b that the amount of tlio 1007 tax charged up to the treasurer waH $200, 210.69, and of that amount thero lias been collected tlio sum of $200,001.60. leaving only 241. 99 as the halanco of uncollected taxes for that year. Cer tainly that is n very creditable show ing, and evidence that our people arc prosperous, for when they are not pros perous they allow themselves to become delinquent in the payment of taxos. The amount of the 1908 tax charged to tho treasurer is $219,392.80, of which amount thero has been collected $108,-. 850.46, the amount collected bolng largely personal tax, as mil ostato taxes do not becomo delinquent until May 1st and few pay tho real estate taxes prior to that time, Another item of interest is Hint dur ing tho year 1908 tho fees earned by the treasurer's offico wore $5,085.10, while tho oxpenses of the ofllco wero $4,027.43, leaving an excess of $1,057.57 which him been turned back into tho treasury. On February 1st tho county treasurer remitted to the state treasurer the sum of $36,011.02, which represented tho balance duo tho state on taxes and money collected up to January 1, 1908. Not Unusual, But Remarkable. Tho rovivul interest la still manifest even in tho mid-wook services of tho Baptist church. Wednesday night of this week, without anything special, almost sixty persons wore present nt tho prayer and ennferenco meeting. A largo proportion of theso woro men, nnd thirty-four different porBons spoko during tho brief time of tho meeting. Two Btrong-young men, who aro not christians publicly, put themselves on rocord as desiring the now life. Noxt Sunday morning tho now mom bora, nutnbering over forty, willreccivo tho hand of fellowship at tho time of observing tho Lord's supper. All tho other services will bo at tho usual hours. Tho Sunday Bchool hud a larger attendance last Sunday than nt any time during tho present pastorate, and tho mark is Bot vory much higher "for next Sunday. The evening sorvlco will bo evangel istic, continuing tho revival, nnd tho ordlnanco of baptism will follow again, nB has been dono for tho past six or eight weoks. Due to Carel cssness. Tho board of inquiry into tho causo of tho wreck nt Dna Tuesday, con sisting of Superintendent Andoraon, Master Mechnnio Nilund, Division Engineer Wharf and two prominent business men of Luramio, hnvo com pleted thoir investigation, and made a report, fixing tho responsibility on tho shoulders of tho Japanorto section foro man of Dana. Tho report declares tht tho net was ono of puro careless ness, ns tho foreman wns fully nwnro of all his duties in the matter, nndjknow what ho should have dono, but failed to do it. The Pension Roll. Tho government of tho Unltod States payH no civil pensions, but on June, 1908, tho numort of 058,071 soldiers and sailors, 293,103 widows and orphans and 610 urmy nurses were on our pen sion roll, making a total of 951,687 pen sioners who are provided for by n generous government. Tho last sur viving revolutionary widow, Esther Sumner Damon, died November 11, 1000, nt her homo at Plymouth Union, Vt. ut the ago of 92 yoars. Tho namos of two daughters of revolutionary Bolufers pensioned by a special net of congress still remain upon tho roll.
