Shall the State Capitol be Moved?
The TltinUNE has nt different times
suggested tho removal of the state cap
itol from Lincoln to some point in tho
central part of the state, and though
thu matter was at first mention accep-
toil na n iriln it (a nnu tntfnn floriniml v.
not only "by tho peoplo west of tho Mcr-
rick county lino, but by peoplo in the
cxtremo eastern part of the state.
Senator Bartos, of Saline county, has
prepared a resolution which will be pre-
BCntCU tO ttlO legislature today Which
nrnvlrlnn fnr thn iinnnlnfmnnr of n mm.
mitteoofsix members to investigate
tho condition of tho capital building at
Lincoln nnd tho ncenns tv of remr.vinir
tho seat of state government to Kenr
doy because of the domands of west
ern Nebraska for a location moro near
ly in the central part of tho state.
The resolution states that tho present
capitol waB located at Lincoln when tho
Kopulation of tho statu was within a
undrcd miles of tho Missouri river,
but that sinco then central and west
ern parts havo so increased in popula
tion that Kearney is tho hub of tho
fltuto as well oh of tho United States;
that tho outer walls of tho state cap
itol arc dangerous, tho roof is rotten,
tho walls sunken and that tho building
is inndenuale to the needs of the state.
Tho resolution fu'thor recites that tho
location of tho capital is so far distant
that it works a hardship to two-thirds
of thu Btuto. it is recommended that
this spccial committee to investigate
shall consist of Ltnrtos. liuclc, Kamsom,
Moyers, Dodison and Raymond, tho
latter being tho statu senutor from thin
district.
To rcmovo tho Beat of government
takes a majority voto of tho electors of
tho state nt a general or special elec
tion called for that nurnoHo. Tho cani
tal was located at Lincoln in 18C7 and
tho amendment providing that its ro
rnoval must bo by n voto of tho electors
was incorporated in tho constitution of
187C.
Tho Tribuno hollovcs that tho news
papers nnd tho citizens of western Ne
braska should awaken to tho impor
tance of this move and push tho matter
nlong. While wo bulicvo urand Island
is tho best located town for a stata
capital, yet wo nro not advorso to pull
lng for Koarnoy if tho majority favor
that town.
Nothing Expected From Legislature.
And now tho World-IIeruld ndmitfl
tho republicans havo given tho peoplo
of Nebraska nil tho reform legislation
that is nccssary. It says froight nnd
passoncrer rates nro low enough and
the assessment of railway property is
eminently satisfactory. That orudito
journal has also discovered since elec
tion that no reforms havo been ovor
looked by tho republicans, and that
thoro Ib theroforu nothing for tho dom
ocratic 'ogislaturo to do but make tho
appropriations and conjuro up some
kind of n bunk deposit guarantee bill
that will not bo dangorous, but will
look good to tho unBopliiscatcd. If the
World-Herald and tho democrats in
general had mado thoso admissions dur
ing tho campaign, thu result at tho
polls might havo boon different, but cv
en that is very doubtful. Tho pooplu
turned tho republicans down right where
reform wob most coiibdIcuous and tho
fact really Is, tho democrutB woro elec
ted to do nothing, and thoir promises
wero not taken seriously. In fact, tho
peoplo novcr tako tho promises of tho
democrats seriously. Thoy elect thorn
to ofilco when thoy want n rest. Noth
ing need bo expected from this Icirisla-
turo oxcept a bunch of lemons. York
Times.
Tho Dickens correspondent of tho
Wallaco Winner says: Deputy Sheriff
Lowell drove up to tho W. R. Weakley
homo about eight miles uouth of lioro n
few days ago and Inquired for W. r.
Wcaltloy, whon to his dismay ho was
informed that said gentleman lived
about five miles south of North Platto.
Tho deputy quickly forked over onouirh
money to pay fop tho treats to about
ten corn shollors, and started on his
bomoward journoy laughing over tho
trip.
