The Farmer and the Tariff.
After nil, thoro is no part of Mr.
Bryan'n career, policy or platform
which so vitally affects tho west as tho
tariff features. In his Dos Moinos
speech Mr. Bryan said:
"But tho whole system is vicious.
Business should not bo built upon legis
lation; it should stand upon its own
merit, and when it docs stand upon its
own merit we shall not only have purer
politics, but we shall have less fluctua
tion in business conditions and a moro
cqultablo distribution of tho proceeds of
toil."
In response tho American Economist
declares:
"This paragraph alone ought to de
feat Mr. Bryan, and wo desire to have
him reply directly to tho following
questions :
"Mr. Bryan:
"Aro you in favor of tho removal of
tho duty of from $2 to $14 per head on
cattle imported from foreign countries'?
"Aro you in favor of the removal of

"Thomas B. Reed said, in comment
ing upon tho agitation for reducing the
tariff duties of tho Dingley law:
"If you aro thinking of modifying.
relaxing or altogether abolishing our
system of protection, you had best not
begin with tho American farmer.
"But Mr. Bryon, who drafted tho
frco wool clause of tho frco trado
tariff of 1891, has no word of oxcop
tion for tho American, farmor. Ho do
nouncesall protection as 'vicious,' in
eluding protection for tho American
farmer."
The Chicago Examiner suggests to
Bryan that he must not think that he
has cleared himself from 'so much as
a shadow of suspicion" as long as a
ponny of tho "Haskell got money" re
mains in his campaign chest. Then it
pointedly asks: "Are you going to re
turn those contributions, Mr. Bryan?"

WHERE SHERMAN STANDS.
Approves Legislation to Improve the
Conditions of Labor,
(Froui Sherman's Speech of Accept
ance.) The Republican party believes In tho
equality of all men before tho law ;
bollovcs In granting labor's overy re
quest that does not seek to accord
rights to cue man denied to another.
Va I r-minded labor asks no more, no
less, and approves the record of the
Republican party because of that par
ty's acts.
I have holpod to make ray party's
record In tho enactment of the Wight
Hour law, the Employers' Liability
act, the statute to minimize the hnz
ard of railroad employes, the Child
Labor law for the District of Columbia
and other enactments designed especial
ly to Improve the conditions of labor
I cannot hope to better state my post
tlon on Injunctions than by a speclfl"
endorsement of Mr. Tuft,' Cincinnati
declaration on that subject. That en
dorsoment I make.
Hit. TAKT ns secretary or war and as
governor general of tho Philippines has
been one of tho greatest employers of
labor Jn tho nation. Tho unl"n man
who wishes not to be led astray by un
jurit charges, who wishes to know the
truth about this socaljod enemy ot labor
would do woll to inquiro what Mr, Taft'i
attitude has bcon towards labor on the
Panama canal nnd In tho islands. Tho
Steam Shqvollors' union did not find
Mr Taftltaonomy, for he is an honorary
member. Wngos and conditions and
future interests bf workmen he has
wutched over and bettered, and in tho
labor legislation which tho president

But He Huns on Forever.
(From the Now York Sun.)
What will Mr Bryan say
ftor next olectlon day?
Mi Bryan will Insist
That he Is an optimist.
Beaten three times! What of that?
He's tha one great Deuiocrut
Willing for his fellow men
To be beaten once again.
Read the Commoner and learnt
Mr Bryan, Mr. Kern,
Suit together on this trip
In the old, oft stranded ship.
(They have quarters In the stern 1..
In this antiquated craft,
Whllo they guze at Mr. Taft ,
Mllrs ahead the race near done
And by Taft and Sherman won
Mr, Bryan, over wise,
Doubtless will philosophize
And to Mr. Kern recite
That remark, already trite,
All prepared and often sprung;
Minimi Yes, but I'm still young!
can wait another four
Years, then try the race once more,
have got this thlni; down pat,
I'm the on great Democrat I"
Julian Duraiul.
Making or Keeping Promises.
Tho dlfferonco botween Mr. Taft's
promise of tariff revision and Mr.
Bryan's pledges In tho same direction
Is that Mr. Taft If olected will be In
position to redeem his pledge, whllo
Mr Bryan If elected would be power

Republican Senate arrayed against bis
free trade plans. Omaha Bee.
