Ukiooh, .1 missionary located at Panay, Philippine Islands, lias written a letter to the Itoston Transcript, in wlncli he says: "J have heard of natives being shot down with out quarter, prisoners being bayoneted without mercy. Such things have happened. War in hell, and human passions are terrible when aroused and turned loose. But these are only phases of the war that arc exceptional, scattered, incidental and invest able to the conditions. No other army, no other war in history has so clean a record as has our army in the Philippines. Oh! for the time to hurry up and come when the American people shall use their eyes and their reason, and be fair with the facts. We arc living in an actual world of cold, hard facts, in many cases terrible facts. Our army, our government has been meeting these facts, and meeting them as a christian nation could best meet them . " In' the attempt to find excuse for some of the men who signed the petition to have Hartley par doned, it is being held out that the petition was directed to Gov. Poyntcr and not to Gov. Savage. In other words the inference is that some republicans would ask a populist to pardon the embezz ler but not a republican. Isn't ft a beautiful conception of the right or wrong of the matter? A far as the petition itself goes it ought never to have been given any consideration for the simple reason that it never represented over one per cent of the voters of Nebraska. And now gentle men arc beginning to show that even these signatures were only a prayer to jyoymer to picif up the hot potato. Grand Island Independent. Tun St. Louis Globe-Democrat calls attention to the fact that while free traders in the United States are at work with an enter ing wedge to discredit a protcc tive tarilT, the government party in England from whence our free trade theories came is about to resume a duty on imports of grain and Hour, thus abandoning the corner stone of the Cobdon theory., The gentlemen who were recently manipulating the "entering wedge" in the house, and who dropped it the othM" day with a dull thud, ought to take note of these things, and if they are republicans they will do well to get on to the republican platform again without delay. A diiv, hot wind swept over Kansas Sunday, doing much damage to the wheat crop, and in many sections of the slate the crop will amount to but little unless rain falls within a few days. The temperature Sunday ranged from ninety to ninety-two. Tins City of Pittsburg, one of the largest steamers in the Mis sissippi river trade, burned to the water's edge near Cm o early Sund.iy morning, resulting in t'le loss of sixty lives.
