Sedgwick's majority for su
preme judge will hug- the thir
teen thousand line.
President Roosevelt has
given assurance that he will visit
the west next summer and make
a personal study of the arid land
sections with a view of making
recommendations for their re
clamation. Of course he will
stop in North Platte for a day.
CUST15K COUNTY, which Was
once the banner populist county
not only in Nebraska but in the
whole United States, tnrncd over
a new leaf last Tuesday and gave
a majority of 107 for Sedgwick,
republican candidate for tin
prcmc judge. But this was not
all; several of the republican can
didates for county offices were
elected. Five and six years ago
the populists had over oncthous
and majority in Custer county.
The Kansas City Star (ind.) is
of the opinion that of all the state
elections held lastTucsday, none
will have so great an cttcct on
national politics as the election
in Nebraska, home of William J.
Bryan, especially after the futile
canvass that he made to keep
the state in linefor thefustonists.
The significance of the NcbraS'
ka election" says the Star, "is
that the influence of Bryan has
been weakened, and in the same
degree the prospects of true dc
mocracy have been brightened."
Kearney Hub.
The wild republican typhoon
which swept over all the country
last Tuesday left ruin and death
in its track. With one lone ex
ception, it found no bamer able
to stand against its fury. The
strong tower of the Tammany
tigers was crushed like an egg
shell. Not a democratic house
was left standing in all Iowa,
while in ourownNcbraskacvcry
thing went to the dc.vil from
Brownville to Broken Bow, save
only "Platte county, where the
fury of the winds were checked
and broken by a democratic rock
as strong as Gibraltar, When
looking for crumbs of comfort
the democracy of the nation may
cast an eye on Platte county in
uope nntl confidence. Hollcn
beck carries the county by near
ly 1,000 majority, and the court
house will be filled for two years
with a corps of Missouri demo
crats. Columbus Telegram.

The Agricultcral Department at
Washington lias just issued its es
timate ol the year's corn crop,
showing a total yield for all states
ot 1,250,597.000 bushelB. Of this
the statement shows that Nebras
ka, notwithstanding the dry
weather which prevailed during
July, will furnish 103,267,000 ibush
els or more than one-tenth of the
entire crop, This is interesting1 as
showing the wonderful recuperative
properties ol Nebraska soil. There
is probably no other state in the
Union which would make such a
magnificent showing. Nebraska i
a grand state and is rapidly in
creasing in wealth and population.
