The Grand Island sugar factory,
owing to a scarcity of beets, yill
not be operated this season. It is
rumored' that the machinery of.tlie
factory will be removed to the irri
gated section of Nebraska, and
that the company will lease suf
ficient land to grow the tonnage of
beets required to keep the factory
running to its full capacity. .The
leased lands would be cultivated
by Russians imported for that pur
pose. This plan certainly seems
to be a sensible one, and apparent
ly the only one in which a sufficient
tonnage of beets can be secured.
The result of the experiment made
with beets at ' Hershey this season
may have a tendency to influence
the factory company to locate in
this section.
