The street commissioner has had
the scraps of paper and other
refuse removed from the business
streets and an effort will be made
to induce the business men to have
their clerks desist from the practice
of sweeping all of the scraps from
the stores into the street.

Baptist Theological Seminary at
Kochestcr will occupy the pulpit at
the Methodist church Sunday
morning, the members ot that con

The ladies' aid society of Cot
tonwood will have "a stand at Ft.
McPherson on Memorial Day
at which they will serve coffee,
and sandwiches, ice cream and cake
and other good things. Those
who vistt the fort are urged to pat
ronize the ladies as the proceeds
will be used for a good cause.

The annual sale and supper given
by the ladies of the St. Patrick's
church at Lloyd's opera house last
night wss well patronized and it
will net the ladies about $140.
Several very attractive booths had
been arranged in the north end
of the opera house and they
were surrounded by buyers most of
the evening, There also seemed to
be a large number of people who
were anxious to know what the
future had in store for them so the
the fortune teller found plenty of
customers. The supper was ex
cellent, lyater in the evening a
dance was given by the young men
and this feature furnished enjoy
ment to a great many,

Mrs. Geo. W. Fine, who is under

it having been found necessary to
utilize all of the time for recitations
and examinations in order to com
plete the course of study.
County Attorney Ridgely is in
receipt of a letter from John Harsh
field in which he says that he can
bring witnesses to prove that he is
the innocent party in the Harsh-field-Fowles
scrape and also that
the latter chased him with a Win
chester afterwards.
The baseball club has finally de
cided to play at Grand Island on
Memorial Day. Manager Hart
says that this decision is final. The
club is also trying to arrange a

its final meeting last evening at
the home of Messrs. Will and Chas.
Hendv. The club has lust com
pleted the study of Macbeth. The
course of study which they pursued
during the past year was an excel
lent one and the members all de

An attempt was made to bur
glarize the Newton residence on
west Fourth street Wednesday
evening but something evidently
frightened the would-be burglar
just alter ue Had ellecteu an en
trance and he iled without taking
anything with him. The family
was unaware of any attempt hav
ing oeen mane to carry oit their
possessions until the following
morning when Mrs. Newton dis
covered muddy foot prints on the
carpet in the parlor. She then be
gan to investigate and found the
window through which they had
entered and to reach which they
had to pass over a muddy spot
where the sprinkler had been run
ning. There is no clue to the bur
glar's identity.

Supt. Park went west in his car

Another crew was recently put
on the. Fourth district. This
makes nine crews in service there.
The temporary lull in business
seems to be over and it is on the in
crease again which makes the
prospect very good for the addition
of another crew on the Third.

ent of Motive Power McConucll and
Superintendent Baxter came up
from Omaha in the special car 01 on
train No. 101 Wednesday afternoon.
They went west from here on a
special made up of an engine and
cars No. 04 and No. 08. They were
making an inspection of the road
bed work which is being done west
of here.
A rumor has been current on the
streets since Tuesday that Mike
McLaughlin was dead. The rumor
seems to have been started by the
fact that Mike was sent to a
hospital in Denver to recover from
Borne injuries received in a fight ai
Cheyenne. Soon after he assumed
charge of the chutes there he had
difficulty with a former foreman
which resulted in his being lauded
in jail and it is supposed that this
last difficulty was caused by some
of the men who took the ex-foreman's
part. Mike's many North
Platte friends are pleased to know
that the rumor ol his death was
false.
Mrs. John Sorcnson has been on
the sick list for the past week.
Walter Kocken has returned from
La Junta, Col., where he spent a
week visiting his sister, Mrs. II. B.
Fetz.
The Ladies of the G. A. R. are
requested to meet at the home ol
Mrs. J. F. Schmalzried Saturday
afternoon, May 19th, to prepare for
Memorial Day.

The Buffalo County refunding
bonds amounting to 545,000, which
were issued by the board of super
visors several months ago, were
recently sold to the state treasurer.
They were purchased at par, the
money coming from the education
al fund.
The members of the vestry of the
Church of Our Saviour and their
wives took possession of the home
of Mrs. M. H. Douglas during her
absence last evening and then sent
a messenger after her to tell her
that friends were awaiting her re
turn. The affair was a complete
surprise but Mrs. Douglas soon re
covered her usual equanimity and
proved herself to be a delightful
hostess. The invaders had brought
with them the materials for a
dainty lunch which was served
about eleyen o'clock. During its
progress, on behalf of the vestry,
the senior warden, F. 13. Bullard,
presented Mrs. Douglas with a
church spoon as a token of their
appreciation of the services she has
rendered aB secretary.
