Next Saturday is the last day
upon which the board of education
will receive bids for the construc
tion of the new school building.
It is quite probable that they will
receive bids from a number of
places as several out-of-town con
tractors have been here looking at
the plans and making estimates.
A supper for the benefit of the G.
A. R. will bt served in the Harring
ton & Tobin building, one door
north of McCabe's drug store,
Tuesday evening, February 20th,
beginning at half past five. The
following is the menu: Cold meats,
escalloped oysters, baked beans and
brown bread, potato chips, pickles,
slaw, cranberries, cake and coffee.
The price of the supper will be only
twenty-five cents.

grand chapter which will be held

arator station Monday amounted to
4,092 pounds, 500 pounds more than
in any previous day. Every oper
ating day day sees an increase in
customers and consequently an in
crease in the receipts. People are
beginning to realize that it is an

There are twenty-two fun makers
in the Gay Coney Island Co.
Seyeral North Platte people are
figuring on a trip to Paris' during
the coming Bummer. Tlfc only
drawback so far is the limited
amount of French at their disposal
which causes them to fear that the
smooth Frenchmen will take ad
vantage of them. Classes for the
study of French will probably be
organized in the near future and it
will be nothing uncommon to see
some of our leading business men
and school ma'ams walking along
the streets industriously conning
French grammars, etc.

Judging trom them it is only a
triile smaller than the Gulf of Mex
ico. S. C. Mccomber has gone to
Omaha to attend the meetings of
the grievance committee of the
O. R. C. which is going to take
up some special cases with the
officials Thursday.
The new 60-horse-power gnso
line engine recently brought here
by the Union Pacific to furnish
power for its icing plant has been
in operation for several days and
works like a charm. The engine
has all of the latest improved
appliances and is quite an artistic
piece of workmanship from a
mechanical point of view. The
shafting is not all in place yet so
the elevator is not being used and
probably won't be used on the
work ot finishing the filling of the
houses. The elevator is quite an
interesting piece of mechanism
which handles the cakes rif ice up
on very much the same principle
that an enormous hand would.
When the machinery is all in place
the ice can be handled by means
of the elevator in a very much
briefer space of time than by the
old method. The labor of icing
trains will be very much lessened.
