The session of the Summer
School will close Thursday. Over
seventy pupils have enrolled and
the school has been very successful
in every particular. Excellent work

tendance. Milton Caress and family, of

Caress is the missionary of the Sun
day School Union in. charge of the
Sunday School work in Custer
county.

Governor Poynter's welcome will
probably be an unusually warm one
in order that the boys may forget

ed during the sessions of the legis

During institute week three lect
ures will be given. The first 0112
will be on Monday evening, August
7th. Its subjects will be "New
Mexico and its people." Prof. A.
E. Davisson of the Stale University
will deliver it. The next lecture
will be on Thursday evening and it
will be delivered by Supt. Dinsinorc
but the subject has not yet been
announced. The third and ltr&t
lecture will be given by Mrs. A. K,
Goudy on Friday evening and its
subject will be "The practical in a
common school education."

Engine No. 826 is in the shops
for light repairs.
Nick Kirsch has taken up his old
work of switching in the yards.
Engine No. 1481, a "tramp en
gine" was in the round house here
yesterday.
The roofs of the various shop
buildings are being treated o a
coat of paint.
Matt Walsh, who was called to
his home in Canada by the serious
illness of his father, has returned,
Geo. Vrotnan. who was in Omaha
attending to some Grievance Com
mittee business, returned Wedncs
day 1110 ruing.
Engineer Schemcrhorn was in
town to-day looking after the pro
gressof the roadbed work which is
in charge of 10 Stengcr.
Roy Vernoii has returned from
his vacation trip to Denver and
other Colorado points and resumed
his work as night expressman.
The constantly increasing busi
ness of the Union Pacific has com
pelled the company to enlarge the
yards at Cheyenne by the aodition
of several long side tracks.
District foreman McKeen's oflice
is now decorated with very hand
some pictures of engine No. 1502
uul engine No. 1703, types of the
two new classes of the engines
which have recently gone into service.
The grading outfit which has
been at work at Paxton was
brought here and yesterday morn
ing was sent to Brady. The in
crease in the force of men at work
011 the roadbed cast of here is due
to the fact that the officials are
anxious to finish all of the roadbed
work cast of here as soon as possible.
Five Pullmans and a baggage
coach for the use of the Harrimau
Scientific Expedition which is re
turning from Alaska, went through
as the third section of train No. 1
Wednesday afternoon. Oti-t car
was Mr. llarriinan's new private
car "Ardeu" which is fitted with
every possible convenience and is a
veritable palace on wheels. The
expedition went to Alaska several
months ago. The entire expenses
are borne by Mr, Uarriman. Mis
return to the commercial world
is awaited with considerable im
patience by the various railroad
interests on accountof his supposed
antipathy to the prebeut traffic
arrangements which the Union
Pacific has with the Northwestern
and his preference to lite own roud,
