Some of the hoboes who were sen tenced to work upon the streets, have been causing the officers more or less trouble. Last Tuesday three of them refused to go to work, saying they would rather remain in jail and take a bread and water diet. They acted ugly and the officers secured chains and balls which they attached to them. They were taken out on the streets, and refusing to work were com pelled to stand during the working hours in the hot sun. This was quite an ordeal, and on Wednesday morning they attempted a new scheme they refused to put on their clothes. This "queered" the officers for a short time but the latter were equal to the emergency. They secured a hose and turned the water on the fellows, who eventually capitulated and said they would don their garments. The;' were taken out but refused to work, and passed another day standing in the hot sun. Yester day one of the three announced that he had enough punishment and j would work the remaining days of his sentence; the other two arc still wearing ball and chain. Seriously Burned.
