Mayor Day has published a no tice to bicyclists notifying them that the ordinance relating to rid ing on side walks will be enforced. The case against Gus Bucking ham and John Bitttendorf, Union Pacific brakemen, charged with misplacing a switch and derailing an engine on the Cheyenne & North ern railway, has been dismissed by county attorney. The evidence in the case was not sufficient to war rant holding the defendants. A. M. Benedict, residing on Judge Hinman's premises west of town, died yesterday morning at six o'clock from pulmonary trouble, from which he had been suffering for some time. A wreck occurred Tuesday afternoon at Brad- Island in which two engines were badly damaged and several freight cars more or less smashed. Engineer Wood White left here with engine 684 on a stock extra with orders to meet No. 19 at Brady Island. The latter train reached Brady, and was in the act of backing in on the side track, when a sudden application of air broke the train in two just as the engine was passing in over the switch. The breaking of the train locked the wheels and the cars could not be moved. In the mean time White had reduced his speed, and receiving a signal from the switchman to come ahead kept on running- at a pretty rapid rate and the two engines came together with much force. The crews on both engines jumped before the crash. The 684 was pitched for ward on its side, while the other engine was turned nearly around. The collision occurred opposite the depot and one corner of the build ing was torn out. Wrecking crews from this city and Grand Island were sent to the scene and at noon yesterday'the engines were picked up and sent to Omaha for repairs, Traffic on the road was delayed but a few hours.
