About $10,000,000 gold will be brought to the United States by European visitors to the Columbian Fair, according to estimates made by English financial papers. The number of Europeans to be at tracted to this country by the fair has probably been largely overes timated on this side, of the water. "Washington, June The president said in reply to a direct question that he intended to call an extra session of con gress not earlier than the first, nor later than the loth of September, unless un expected contingencies should necessi tate an earlier meeting. The president further said: "While there has been no mystery nor secrecy in regard to my intention in this matter, I think it not amiss that our people should be informed authoritatively that the time is at hand when their representa tives in congress will be called npon to deal with a financial condition which is the only menace, to the country's welfaro and prosperity. It is well for the people to take up the subject for themselves, and arrive at their own conclusions as to the merits of a financial policy which obliges us to purchase idle silver bullion with gold taken from our reserve. One does not need the eye of a financier to see that this gold thus subtracted from the government stock is eargly seized by other nations for tho purpose of strenght ening their credit at our expense. "It does not need the art of statesman ship to detect the danger that awaits upon the continuance of this operation. Already the timidity of capital is pain fully apparent, and none of us can fail to see that fear .and apprehension in monetary circles will ultimately hring suffering to every humble home in our land. "I think that, between now and the meeting of congress much depends upon the action of those engaged in financial operations and business enterprises. Our vast national resources and credit are abundantly sufficient to justify them in the utmost faith and confidence. If instead of being frightened they are conservative, and instead of anticipating disaster thejr keep up their share of hope and steadiness, they shall perform a patriotic duty and at the same time protect their own interest. The things just now needed are coolness and calm ness in financial circles, and study the reflection among our people." Presidential Appointments Washington, June G. The following appointments were made Monday by the president: J. P. Arthur, sanitary inspector, marine hospital service for duty at Laredo, Texas; Dr. S. Will ard, sanitary inspector, Laredo, Texas; u. a. uues 01 Texas, immigrant in spector. Resignations P. J. McCabe of Minnesota, immigrant inspector. Cap tain J. F. Mo., June k. The current of the Missouri river switched to the Missouri side Sunday night and has already done a great deal of damage. It has cut behind three of tho govern ment dykes and the fourth dyke is in danger. The people of this place are greatly alarmed. It is feared that the river will cut through tho chain of lakes which lie just east, and with the river on the west, tins would prove disastrous to all the property in the bottoms. Al ready hundreds of dollars worth of valu able farm lands in this immediate vicini ty has been lost in the raging torrents. The river is still rising. Good Fruit Prospects. Malvern, Ia., Juno 6. An interview with W. K. Follett, tho veteran horti culturist, elicits the information that the prospects for small fruits, as raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and grapes, are better than for several years. The apple prospects have been good until within the last week, when a twig blight was noticed, which threatens to cut the crop short. Plums promise a fair crop. Cherries will bo almost a total failure. EULALIA JNCHICAGO. The Infanta of Spain and Her Suite Arrive In the Windy Cit-. ATTENDANCE AT THE FAIR. The opinion is steadily gaining ground among railroad men that they have put their World's fair .rates too high, and unless thev lower them will stand a chance of losing money. Letters by the hundred are pouring in upon them on this snlvject, and it looks likely that- there -will be a change before long. The meeting of the Western Passenger asso ciation was harmonious, and the adop tion of the agreement will probably be settled if the terms of the Atcliisou are agreed to.
