The cattle wild with tnght, made for the hills, fallowed by about 2,000 head from another herd urged on by wild yells from the Herders and the rapid discharge of revolvers. Soon the hill side was a sea of tossinsr horns, and the srronnfl thundering with the tread of ten thousand hoofs. We have been hsmrled the follow ing with the request tliat it be published: The Episcopalians who refused to sit in convention with colored clergymen in the ciby of Charleston have been rebuked in a lengthy statement by tne ministers wno re mained. The latter publish a letter addressed to them by Cardinal Gibbons in repl' to' questions they had asked. It looks queer to see one body of EpLcopalians appeal to a cardinal against another portion of that denomination. But here is the letter of the cardinal, which explains itself: Respected Sir: In reply to your lnqun-y, I beg to say that it is in accordance with the spirit of the Catholic Church, and of her practice, whenever practicable, to ordain clergy of the race that is to be evangelized. When I attended the Vatican Council in 1869-1 S70 I saw around me in the Council chamber prelates of every color that characterizes the human familv. In the Propaganda College, Rome, colored students are nearly always found, and there is no distinction whatever between th'em and the whites. As far as I am informed, we have only one or two colored priests in the "United States. We have here in Baltimore a Commu nity of Colored Sisters established nearly half which was century a ago. I hope the day is approaching when colored clergymen will be multiplied who will aid in preaching the Gospel and breaking the Bread of Life to the people of their own race.
