The through California express
train on the Santa Fe road left
Kansas City in charge of Engineer
Ben Wharton, a non-union man,
who was expelled from the brother
hood in 1877. His wife was in the
cab acting as fireman, her clothing
being covered with a rubber ulster.
Every car of the train was filled
with passengers.
A Delaware, Lackawana and
Western passenger train tumbled
down a thirty-foot embankment at
Tracy's bridge, near Binghampton,
N. Y., at 2:15 Friday morning.
The cars caught fire and were soon
consumed. A man perished in the
flames; a half-dozen passengers are
probably fatally hurt, and many
others were wounded. Most of
those who escaped had no covering
but their night clothes, and shivered
for two hours in the frosty air be
fore a relief train arrived.

A report from New York says the
Brighton Beach Hotel was blown

were perfected last week. The ho

upon a platform, which n in turn,
was upon wheels like a car. This
weight was to be drawn by a small
army of locomotives. Its own
weight was all that kept the hotel
in position, and the fierce wind
which prevailed had full play upon,

Ex-Mayor Carter Harrison, of
Chicago, has been visiting Burmah.
He says: ''Theebaw is a state pris
oner in the Madras country, and the
English blacken the poor devil's
character so as to justify in the
eyes of the world their high-handed
act when they took from him his
country. I met several intelligent
Italians who have been in the coun
try for many years. These declare
the representations of the English
to be calumnies; that Theebaw was
not a drunkard, that he was a good
hearted, overgrown boy, and that
the acts laid to his door as barbari
ties were the acts of his ministers
in which he had no hand."

How Men Die.
If we know all the methods of approach
adopted by an enemy we are the better enabled
to ward off the danger and postpone the moment
when surrender becomes inevitable. In many
instances the inherent strength of the body suf
fices to enablo it to oppose tho tendency toward
death. Many, however, have lost these forces to
such an extent that there is little or no help.
In other cases a little help to the weakened lungs
will make all the difference between 6udden
death and many years of useful life. Upon the
first symptoms of a cough, cold or any trouble
of the throat or lungs, give that old and well-
known remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a care
ful trial. It will prove what thousands say of it
to be, the "benefactor of any home."
The channel of the Ohio River
five miles above Steubenville is said
to be completely blocked with sunk
en coal-barges. Over 400,000 bush
els of coal are being scoured by the
muddv waters. A combination of
recklessnpss and stupidity appears
responsible for this mishap, which
makes the situation serious not only
for boats attempting to stem the
stream, but for the towns below
waiting for fuel supplies. High
water is the only way out of the
present difficulty.
Sore throat may be cured in a few hours by ap
plying Chamberlain's Pain Balm when the first
symptoms appear. If the case is a bad one,
thoroughly saturate a flannel bandage with it and
apply to the throat. Chamberlain's Cough Rem
edy shoukl.be taken internally and a cure is cer
tain. Solely C. W4 Price and F. H. Longley.
Cleveland's majority over Blaine
in New Jersey was just 4,411. The
narrow margin of Democratic safe
ty in that state is made still narrow
er by the return to the republican
ranks of thousands of temperance
republicans who have been acting
temporarily with the prohibitionist
organization; and that man is a fool
who cannot foresee the inevitable
result of any attempt to force upon
the democrats of this great manu
facturing and1 protectionist state a
free trade platform and a free-trade
candidate. New York Sun.

The Men That Saved This Nation.
Below we print an extract from
the National Tribune which gives a
clear statement of facts. Read it,
young men, and remember that one
man out of every nine of that great
army laid down his life while in the
service to make-it possible for you
to live in this free country; read it,
and when an old soldier passes you
on the street on crutches or other
wise wounded remember that he
was the unlucky one out of every
ten that stood up in the front rank
of that great army to save this na
tion. "There were in all reduced to a
three-years standard 2,320,272
men in thev service of the United
States during the war. These men
in four years fought the unprece
dented number of .2,261 battles and
skirmishes, and nearly- 50 of these
were battles in which the fighting
and slaughter were greater than is
customary in the great battles of
Europe Which have decided cam
paigns and wars.
Of the men who enlisted, 184,713
or more than a great European
army were actually killed on the
field of battle, to say nothing of
those who went to the hospitals or
their homes to die, and nearly 200,-
000 died of disease. In all, 400,000
of the young men who formed this
great host perished during the great
struggle.
One man in every 60 was killed
on the field of battle.
One in every 56 died of wounds
received.
One in every 13died of disease.
One in every 9 died while' in the
service.
One in every 10 was wounded.
This is an aDDalliner array of losses
unprecedented in the history of
wars.

Who is Your Best Friend.
Your stomach of course. Why? Because if it
is out of order you are one of the most miserable
creatures living. Give it a fair honorable chance
and see if ;t is not the best friend you have in the
end; Don't smoke in the morning. Dont drink
in the morning. If you must smoke and drink
wait till your stomach is through with breakfast.
You can drink more and smoke more in the even
